Question OT - UK x-Reg vehicles

Question for the UK Contingent:

What does the term "X-Reg" mean when referring to vehicles in your country? I've seen reference to it a few times in "T.W.O" and "Bike". Examples for context, from the January issue of Bike:

"In standard colours, the R1100S has the visual appeal of a neglected F-reg Skoda..." If I remember correctly, the Skoda is a rather plain Czech car - rather insulting (although the article does go on to heap big time kudos on the S as "Surprise of The Year").

Rupert Paul's column:
"One of my all-time favourite motorcycles - a magnificent Kawasaki KH-400 - would lose every test in Christendom (except, possibly, a test of S-reg metallic green two-stroke triples)."

Just curious.

Thanks.

It refers to the year of registration. It kicked off in the early 60's when suffixes were added to registrations; ABC 123A meant (I think) the car was registered in 1963. Next year it would be ABC 123B and so on. The periods ran from August 1st, though, not January 1st so vehicles could be one of two years.

In 1983 they ran out of suffixes and started A123 ABC, B123 ABC.

In late 2001 they started again but with marks indicating the area of registration. My S is a 'Y' as it was registered in May 2001. 'Z' was never used.

Hope this helps, and you haven't fallen asleep by now!

Neil

So, our bikes' appearance is being compared to a well-used 1968 communist-bloc car?!?

I know that you Brits like your humor on the dry and sarcastic side, but that's just a little harsh, don't you think?

Thanks for the info, Neil.
