Another Tire Deal

Ok Last time I told you about free tires (Diablos) this time it's a little more.
How can you beat this price Michelin Pilot Race Rear 170/60ZR17 for $40...

http://www.motorace.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=17-3442

or Michelin Pilot Race Soft Rear 170/60ZR17 $40

http://www.motorace.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=17-3412

Thanks Bigj for the heads-up

hell of a deal, but I'd like to know, which tire would heat up quicker in normal day to day riding or should i even consider this tire for daily around town short trip riding? for 40$ a piece, i could buy 4 for 1.

I've ridden a bike with those on the street and didn't care for them at ALL. Very slow to warm. I'm not sure they ever met proper temp.
Otoh, if the fast guys have other advice, I'd say that supercedes mine.

Agreed the tire says race on it for a reason.............if your going to do a track day how can you go wrong for $40.............save your street rubber for the street.

Roger you need to get on the gas a little earlier.........put some heat in....... maybe that light/low horse bike doesn't bring them up to temp.

Race tyres aint no good for street use, full stop. They will not get up to the correct temperatures quick enough or not at all. What with having to stop at junctions and the constant slowing down caused by traffic conditions. Also they can only take so many heat cycles before being next to useless. But for that kinda money as joe said, use em for trackdays where you will be rewarded by good consistant grip. And saving your everyday road rubber.Does make me laugh when you see guys using the lastest race rubber on the streets just for the pose and "if they use it on the track, then it will amazing on the road.Wont it?".Then procede to the first set of corners or roundabout and have a massive slide.

Cool

I ran a set of Michelin TX15/TX25 Race 3's(the predecessor of the Pilot Race) on the street. I got 10,000 miles out of the front(!!). I got 4500 miles out of the rear. Normally , I probably wouldn't run a DOT race tire on the street, but if it's summer, or you live in south FLorida or the Southwest, I don't think it's that bigga deal, especially the rear. The reason I posted it, some cat over at Badweb lost his tire prematurely and needed a cheap replacement. That's cheap.

The reason you got high mileage is because the tyre would have gone hard from too many heat cycles. But it wouldnt be performing nowhere near as it should off.

...ummm...from having used/played with both: race tires on the street: bad idea. it doesn't work well.
they either never heat up, or don't hold the temp long enough for street use.
and they're really, really picky about the surface they roll over. they stay slippery longer too.
the only safe, suitable place to play with them is on the track...and even at that, many riders don't get them hot enough to work properly.

on the street they feel like the wheels that come on Barbie's Corvette: hard plastic. maybe if you want to go ice racing, they're a good starting point, but beyond that, i'd only dance with them on a track.

BMW Roundel

The front probably did go hard. I am not a proponent of running race tires on the street. But I've done it, and I've seen it done. I don't neccesarily think it's a terrible idea. Depends on the circumstances.
I will say this. The rear Bridgestone Trailwing that came OEM on my GS is a DANGEROUS tire in the wet. That thing has the traction of teflon on ice on a wet road. It started spinning the other day crossing lanes on the 80. I was in fifth, accelerating shifted to sixth, and it lit up at about 90 mph. The week before, it lit up so bad in 3rd at about 50 mph, I almost highsided.

I really don't go more than 40 when I split. Other people do, but I honestly try to keep it at 40 or below. There used to be a standard that cops use(and still do mostly) no more than 15 mph faster than traffic, up to 40 mph max.
