Lever Travel with Fully Bled Brakes - How Much?
I've changed by front brake fluid and bled them with a vacuum-type bleeder, and am pretty damn sure I've gotten all of the air out.
The lever feels good, not spongy. Yet, if I squeeze REALLY REALLY REALLY hard I can get the lever to just contact the handlebar grip. I am sure that if I ever squeezed anywhere near that hard while riding I'd launch myself to Jupiter, so this behaviour is not causing me undue concern. I also have the lever reach adjusted to the smallest-reach setting. So, should I be concerned and spent more time bleeding (yech), or am I likely OK? |

From what I gather If you keep the brake lever squeezed (via band or clamp) for 24 hours (about?) the lever feel will firm up.
I havent heard a official explanation for this though. John ![]()

My lever is on the #4 setting, if I squeeze it with both hands it will touch the grip.

I clamped the lever overnight with a tie wrap. Wow, it is as hard as a rock now, huge difference, no chance of contacting the lever now.
I had seen this tip before, but never tried it. Why DOES it work, I wonder? I don't know the design of the piston, but perhaps with the lever actuated, entrained air can rise and escape into the reservoir (as opposed to just rising and having nowhere to go when the lever is released. In any case, no concerns now! Thanks for reminding me of the tip. |

Just installed some Spiegler Stainless Line ( http://www.spieglerusa.com/about.cfm )on my 03 Rep. Very nice kit if I do say so myself. Very clean install, the line are tucked behind the forks for protection, and I have much improved sensitivity in the front brake lever. I also used Motul DOT 5.1 fluid when bleeding. I'm comfedent that if I were to pull my brake lever that hard I would be launched as if I had a JATO rocket up my ass! I will try and get some pics post tonight.

When you keep the brake lever squeezed overnight it keeps the valve in the master cylinder (handle bar) open. That allows any trapped air to travel up and out into the resevoir.

one of the reasons it works also is your compressing a liquid(brakefluid) and forcing a gas(air) out of suspension and will collect at the top... the point of escape.

Raven,
Didn't you ride a Ducati last October with real brakes. Yunno, they don't require overnight squeezes to work right!

Sorry Rave,
I need to support my local dealer with my mere money and am on the waiting list for the first run of the new K-bike. According to "factory sources" the R platform will be a dog compared to its 165hp and sub 550lbs. weight. . You need to start thinking about this too. Your R looks like its getting tired.

peakrunner, what made you stick with the factory 1 into 2 setup versus the 2 lines from the master cyclinder with a line to each caliper? i installed the same speilger setup but with the two lines versus using the OEM rigid plumbing.

I didn't see a 2 line option on there site. For the S there was only a 3 piece set. I think either way you can't go wrong. I like that 3 piece because it tucks behing the Fork a bit tighter. The brakes feel rock solid. So maybe Spiegler changed the design because there was a benefit to doing this way. Seems like more work but is all good.

When you bleed the brakes, if you have ABS you need to pull the tank off and bleed the ABS system. Also it will do away with that spongy feeling, make it rock hard
