Help I have Rod knock on my engine
After a Typical weekend in the Dirt(for Golem)

I check the cam chain tensioner,valve gaps,valve train, vertical play with out any luck, i guess is oficial my poor Golem is Ill to the point of no return,is kind of funny i confess I was sure she will dye in a honorable way like jumping down a clif or something but no she broad me home as ussual with out complain and then next morning(yesterday) let me know that something was really wrong,I don't really know what to do,I can describe the noise a top end "Rod knock" mostlly present from 3000 to 5000 RPM's up and down trottle(makes me think is not related to the lack of presure on the cam chain tensioner)well I don't really know what to do now I guess was fun when it last after all the way I tread and mistread her was just matter of time,,I can safelly say this is the most Abuse and mistread "S" ever (that I know off so far)but don't take me wrong I did all the tuneups, adjustments and fixes require so the mecanical elements were taking care but at the same time I treat the poor thing super hard and oviuslly to the point of destruction,, I think I have about 90,000 Milles since august of 2002 so i'm not complaining,the quality and reliability of this bike is Incredible,at least in my experience. if anybody have sugestions or possible scenarios to explore please let me know.. she did great all weekend http://patineto.smugmug.com/photos/2745212-M.jpg |
Well, if it's really rod knock, and limited to that, it can be addressed with the motor still in the frame. Not so bad. It's however a nearly unheard of failure mode on these motors. Keep us posted on what you find out. I'm curious

Ya gone that far to modify and create the bike you wanted, Id fix it, either rebuild or used engine replacement!

could be a cam losing a lobe. they make a rattly sort of sound.

My problems is i don't have a place to work on her so for now I need to keep the bike in running condiccion just in case I find a place I can work on it and take it there... Now THAT'S trailriding.....whoever rides one of those in the cowbell enduro and finishes on time should get the medal of honor (or pour 'le merite)....

it won't show up in clearances. in the ones i've seen the lobes lose their noses, and the lifters have been pitted.
you need to pull it all apart and inspect it. |
