OT-anthony gobert arrested...

for suspicion of DUI. that poor sap may as well pack his bags and head for oz. his performance upon his return was lackluster and although he apears fit and at least to some degree reformed, his decision making ability is much poorer than his riding skills and even they appear to be fading.

It is quite a shame to see talent like his wasted. Recently I saw a repeat of the '96 (I think ) Wolrd Superbike race from Phillip Island when he blew away everyone on a Kawasaki. It was a fantastic display of riding!

Cheers

Yeah, I have that one on tape. Definitely '96, and impressive.
I think the guy just has too much ego and not enough discipline to
consistently perform well.

You have to give it to Anthony, that guy is real!Smokes reefer, drinks, gets fat and still smokes anybody on a good day;it will never forget Laguna Seca...A true rider and working class rebell. All thoose corporate puppets with no personalities are boring compared to Anthony Gobert;we need more Anthonys and the worl would be a better and more fun place!Russel,Sheene,Mang and Fogarty had a little bit of character, too.
A few years ago in Sears Point I saw Anthony on a scooter and talked him up a little bit and he only said yeah I had fun in Germany drinking with the fraeuleins...;-) (That was when he was riding the Suzuki in GP...
Good on ya mate

You tell'em Chris. Yes, Heil Non-conformity, ideally as knee-jerk as possible. Don't show up for your team's races. Not with Ben and Vance and Hines, not with your most recent duc team either. Don't get your passport in order and show up at the races. Be completely irresponsible and leave others in the lurch. That's the kind of color we need. I'm tired of the lackluster losers who show up and finish races, be it on or off the podium. Who needs those guys. Win one race every three years, what more can fans ask? If you win too often, or even show up, you'll be boring. It's so much more fun to watch a bike sit in the pits when the rider doesn't show. I don't know what those stupid "riders" (the ones who actually ride) are thinking. LOSERS!

Rebel w/o a Clue, even if possesed of some raw talent

Gobert got so much raw talent,he would smoke anybody on this board totally drunk and stoned...The guy has a good attitude, enjoys life and doesn't take it and work (motorcycle racing) too serious.Life is short, might as well enjoy it and he proved that he still could beat all thoose clean riders because of his talent. He was never a world champion and collected trophies but all they do is collect only dust anyways...
Anthony had/has fun in life and that counts more,at least in my book. And if he did not show up for a race,he probably had better things to do at the moment...;-))
Even Rossi got tired of being Hondas corporate puppet and race-employee;maybe he can be himself an have some fun with Yamaha again...

Chris, Anthony's good days have become few and far in between. He has burned bridges with Suzuki, Ducati, and now Honda even though Anthony was not directly contracted with Honda, Erion Racing is. In 1999 when he was with Vance and Hines he started making excuses there at the end of the season for losing according to Jim Leonard who was the crew cheif for V&H and finally Anthony blew his big chance at the last AMA race at Colorado Springs (but he was being cool) when Ducati Corsa was there at that race to take Anthony to WSB but Anthony was being cool and didn't show for the last race. Ben Bostrom got the job for 2000 with Ducati Infostrda and some other boring guy by the name of Troy Bayliss took over after Fogerty got hurt.
Back again with the AMA Anthony got a Yamaha factory ride on the ex Haga R7 and he put in a few good rides the first part of the season. I watched him win at Sears Point on the R7 but that was about it.
Austin Ducati , Anthony led almost every race entered on the Ducati but would fade quick and start making excuses why but never was his doing. After their split Austin got Giovanni Bussei who had never seen the US tracks and did very well for not knowing the AMA circuit.
I think Anthony has a lot of natural talent and it is a shame for it to go to waste but I am afraid he is done with any of the big teams.
Chris it is too bad with him being so cool he is missing out on a lot of money but I forgot that is more of that corporate stuff.

Chris, Goebert's days are done because of attitudes like his and yours. You forget racing careers are short and you need to be as serious as you can while you can. Maybe Anthony and you can run a weed patch up in Northern Cal after he becomes a free agent soon. You might be able to put that raw talent to good use out runnin the corporate law...

If you want to make money, motorcycle racing is the wrong profession to go into.I thought motorcycle raing was about fun, comradery and duking it out on the track...But today it is all about money. No wonder everybody is so unhappy...But I got your point.Gobert should have kept in nose clean, became a champion and made the money;then he could drive drunk in his big Benz and smoke some **** with his girlfriends in the whirlpool of his big mansion now...;-)) Kind of eminds me of the story of the poor italian fisherman who is lying all day on the beach, drinking, and having fun with the ladies.A guy comes by and askes him why he is not working any harder. One day you can by a fishing boat and let other people work for you and enjoy life lying on the beach;but that is what I'm doing already today..;-))
Chris;Anthony Gobert Fan because of the way he is,in my book a true champion...;-))
Don't take life too serious guys,we won't get of it alive, and the guy with the most money/toys still dies and nobody has been seen who could take anything of his **** with him on the final journey...

We are still talking about Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey, and Eddie Lawson today.

In 20 years, we'll still be talking about Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi.

In 20 years, no one will know who Anthony Gobert was.

last time I saw Gobert was at the 2001 GP at Philip Island - he was sitting in a group, some his brothers - Gobert was either stoned or drunk but ended in an all in brawl - wasted talent for sure ....

how about aaron gobert, he blew his older brother away on the track for the one event anthony actually made it to.

i think there is some sort of negative vibe for the riders that got stuck riding that R7...Haga and Gobert just cant seem to pull it together. albeit, Haga has whipped his attidude into shape...his skill/talent or machinery may be his limiting factors now.

Chris, can you clarify that "true champion" definition? I could loan you a dictionary, but I'm not sure it would help. It all sounds like childishness. It doesn't have to be about money, I agree with you there, but, letting your team down, repeatedly, across multiple teams, is another matter. I'm pretty far from being a corporate mindset fan, but I kinda like the personal integrity thing. That does mean something, and without, you're not _any_ kind of champion. Just a loser, of the biggest sort. Your fishing analogy is not well thought out. The fisherman was cool. He wasn't letting anyone down. Gobert would have to rise a good deal to attain the level of a fishing/beach bum. Gives him something to aim for. In the mean time, he'll just have to remind people that DUI=cool. Oz has posted way more than their share of champs, but Tony isn't among them. Bayliss is a great example (wins races, good guy, humble, friendly, wins championships)
