New exhaust from RB Racing
I thought I'd pass this along for speculation or critique. RB Racing seems to have taken a new interest in BMW but my experience with them has never been good. This exhaust is well done and pretty ugly but I guess I'll leave that for you all to decide.
You can check the full story on it here. Personally I think it looks a bit stupid to extend that far but hey, that's just me...

I'll second the ugly vote. Nothing pretty about that. And a terrible fit under the tail. Why can't they fab an oval cross-section can to fit better where the two cans come out? Don't tell me they can't bend the sheet into that shape. I've seen some phenomenal things done with metal.
Looks like they just slapped something together and called it done. I'd be more interested in someone making a decent exhaust out of titanium. would shed a few ounces, and maybe get rid of the discoloration problems we have with stainless steel.

It will be interesting to see just what, if any, gains are made with this one. I do like the construction of the header portion and the RBRacing guy seems to know his stuff, if you can get past the pontificating on his website. It looks like the muffler is so long because he's using a proprietary silencing technology that's not a 'glasspack' type, which is a selling point for that particular type of muffler. the header spigots are works of art compared to the OEM stuff.

Now here's a question, and an observation; The license plate bracket for the RB pipe is hanging the license plate off to one side and vertical, like a bunch of the chopper guys and Corbin do for the smuggler. ANyone ever reseearch how legal it is to move plate location and orentation around? I have mine off to one side on a custom bracket, but oriented the correct way (long side side-to-side, the correct way, not up-n-down) The chopper folks seem to get away with it; maybe the heat doesn't care anymore, but that used to be a common 'equipment violation' ticket back in the days of real one-percenters..and a segue' into 'probable cause' for a search, and usually after that, an arrest...

That plate bracket is illegal in NJ. But then again, technically speaking, aftermarket pipes are "for off road use only" anyway, right.

Highlander179:
If your roads are as frost-heaved and pot-holed as Iowa then I would have to argue that you ARE "off-road"! ![]() Seriously, it is wonderful, perplexing and down right rude all the different laws that abound state-to-state. I believe, but could be wrong on this, but Iowa and Illinois are the only 2 states that share a common border and don't require helmets. Illinois does require protective eyewear, and I have heard of folks getting dinged for that as they cross the river! And of course, no signs up proclaiming such. Just (a few) signs on the freeways proclaiming Illinois an .08 alcohol state.

I don't understand how anyone riding at highway speed can see without protective eyewear. I remember when I was nine or ten, riding an XR75 that went about 50mph and without eyegear I couldn't see cause my eyes watered up so much.
to keep this on-topic. I wouldn't buy the pipe, it doesn't look right. |

Hideous!
Aftermarket items should not only perform well, but also either complement or even enhance the artistic beauty of the bike. Please forward these comments to those guys so they stop making it!

Moybin, Wisconsin doesn't require helmets either, so you get 3 states to ride through. They do require eye protection.

Thanks, Anton. And you can ride from Iowa to Illinois to Wisconsin and back to Iowa!!! That's an E-ticket (that statement dates me!!!)
I know up Idaho-way they make under-18 year olds wear helmets but 18 and up it's optional. The BMWMOA membership book is a fine resource for current laws.

JonyRR, Don't know about the rest, but I'd almost look forward to just getting stopped for something like an off-kilter plate!
Bob Bain is it of RB Racing may know his stuff and can make it go fast...but I've heard he's the only one that can get it to run. [I'd advise extreme caution.] Later, BB

I don't think he's gonna sell many off those pipes cause it's damn ugly.To look that ugly and sell it must at least bring 115 bhp at the rear wheel without any mods...

I think the build quality is really great and the headers are nicely done but I'm not one to leave asthetics out of the equation and having the tail pipe extend that far is a poor decision. Too bad as I could see an single oval exhaust as a real sexy solution that no ones done yet.
Again, I know no one who's had anything good to say about these guys and I'd be dubious of buying something from a company that has a page on their site dedicated to "Eat Sh** and Die"... But that's just me. Gregor PS They're going to introduce a turbo system for the S in a week. I'll post that info if/when I recieve it.

Are they really that close? They've babbled about it for > 2years saying several times it was 30-60 days off.
I too am dubious about their customer service.

I think one of the things I find interesting is how much the design is about not bending the flow to abruptly. If you've ever seen a formula 1 header you know they take some real twists and turns so I don't really see the benefit. Curious.
