GPS anomalies
Has anyone noticed any GPS anomalies lately? has the acccuracy of your GPS unit 'drifted' at all? Just curious if I am seeing something or it's the way I'm inputting/reading my waypoints. My magellan mariner has been acting 'wierd' lately; probl'y just me, but since a significant minority of us use GPS, I thought I'd ask....

I haven't had any problems with mine. Was it cloudy or overcast when you had the problems - sometimes that causes errors.

I also use a Meridian, with the mapsend Topo software. ocasionally I notice that I am 50ft off the road on the map... I figured it was a problem with the mapping software.

GPS accuracy can vary a lot. Just the same, it would help to know a bit more about the problem you are seeing. As mentioned above, it isn't unsusual to have significant differences between reality and the GPS maps. This can happen for a variety of reasons. This would be a consistent thing though. If you are running into strange unrepeatable behaviors there are a number of possible explanations. I have had days when I couldn't get mine to lock on to a signal well enough to navigate for 30 minutes due to the position of the satellites.

What yr was it manufactured?, Older models had some software problems. I recall in the early 90's Buying a Megellan that was
designed for the open water didn't work to well in the woods. When I did a lot of backpacking, even when I was in a open clearing it would have problems locking on

Well, the might be it; I have an older mariner model; waterproof, and it seems to work well; I'm going to see if there's a firmware/software upgrade. The specific issue is that I set waypoints with it a while back on a ride I do regularly, and that particular waypoint set was always accurate; now, the same one seems 'different' and I was wondering if the accuracy algorythm that's used for commercial GPS has been 'modified' by Big Brother for the duration; a couple of pilot friends seemed to notice the same thing with their commercial gear; who knows...

Yes, it is; handheld with a monochrome display. Is there a firmware upgrade for it? thanks...

If anything, Big brother is making GPS more accurate. Clinton signed a bill removing the encryption requirement for the high accuracy GPS stream. All of the new birds going up have enhanced accuracy.

Supposedly, the latest enhanced mode is supposed to have something like 'dial-an-accuracy' via software; I remember a TRW guy telling me the last 2 birds they launched could be programmed to either do the WAAS enhancement (default) or 'go fuzzy' in specific locales; the exact technical details escape me now as I don't do that EPLRS stuff anymore; I just wanted to get a feel for the general consensus; I agree my handheld is a cheapo, but it USED to have repeatable results with the same dataset and now it doesn't seem to...hmmmm...and it's not batteries as I power it from the scoot...

Sure EZ; let me know; IM me when you're up this way; I know a killer route up the west side of Puget Sound, up all the way to Kingston, then ferry across to Edmonds; right along the waterfront most of the way and not too much cage traffic...
