Trackday - Donkey Style

Well, I did 4 heats at Firebird International yesterday. I was holding my own on the cornering, but I was donkey dust on the straightaways...

I finally hit my cylinder head on the pavement hard enough to upset the bike. It was not a pleasant feeling, but righted itself immediately. Saw a few guys spank out and was glad it was not me. Here's some pics.

I know... I need to to hang off a little.

I didn't realize how bad my form was till seeing these this morning. One of the instructors explained to me the virtues of hanging off a little. I'll need to practice.

I did the duct tape work thank you very much.

Very cool to see the S's at the track. You look good.

Work on visual skills and cornering lnes first, then add the body positioning stuff. My experience is that without a track school with 1-1 instruction and critique on the bike, you'll do more harm than good "hanging off."

For professional-looking duct-tape (is there such a thing as professional duct-tapers?), put on way too much, then use a razor blade to carefully trim between the fairing and the lens and peel off the excess. You end up with a nice, clean duct tape section that is the exact size and shape of the lens it is protecting.

Not the best pic, but there it is.

Whoa ... he'll do even more harm if he pile-drives that cylinder head into the ground and crashes.

Thanks Mark and thanks JAS... hanging off is something that doesn't come naturally for me, but I will be working on it.

The ergos on this bike make hanging off feel a little odd at first. Not to mention banging your knees off the cylinder heads every now and then. I'm 6'3" and I've got to get my ass completely off the seat to get a knee down before a cylinder head hits.

I used to practice hanging off while going down the freeway. Yeah, it looked dorky, but A) it gave me a chance to get a feel for it while traveling on a nice wide, straight piece of pavement, and B) I look dorky anyway.

If you try that, just make sure you are ready to lean the bike in the opposite direction to keep from running off the road.

When you hang off in a corner, get your body in position BEFORE you turn the bike in. Otherwise you are going to confuse yourself AND the chassis.

I pull the headlight fuse to avoid this problem, although I'm not sure it really is that bad. On the S, of course, pulling a fuse may be a lot more work than on a typical track bike with fuses in a neat little fuse box under the seat.

Only right hand turns with the exception of a few left hand switchbacks

As for the mirrors.... well they complimented my running lights.
