30,000+ turns in 13 days

Well the family is back from two weeks on the best roads in the world (for a sport rider). I figure we made 30,000+ turns, in the 13 days we were in the Alps, it is indescribable.

I actually felt burned out the last day and a half we rode there, but I am sure a day of rest would have cured that. Now the only problem is the best roads here suck, by comparison. I will be posting some pics soon but here is a short video of just one of the hundreds of roads we rode, most miles like this.

Warning: Large file, need high speed connection or a lot of time.

Manghen Pass

All I can say is put $10 a week in a jar (one less 12 pack of Bud) and after a couple of years take the $$$ and GO!!!! I will guarantee you will never regret it.

Did this one myself, Me, wife, 3 sons and one future daughter in-law. With 5 bikes and 6 people I couldn't afford the luxury of an organized tour.

The wife and I had been twice before with Beach's http://www.beachs-mca.com/ on their 2 week alpine tour, so I had the maps and knew the area.

Like I said, save your pennies and go, I can't believe anyone would regret it.

St Gottard

Furka and Grimsel passes

Offen Pass

Passo Pordoi

Anyone know which Alps pass was used in filming the "Goldfinger" Bond movie? Yeah, it was a long time ago, but curious minds would like to know.

We arranged through Beach's, the bikes came from Karl Maier motorrad. Bikes were in good mechanical shape, new tires on the 1150's. The GS I had did have some minor cosmetic dings and such, but nothing major. All in all I was happy, I do have one issue I am going to write them a letter about and that was the charges for new cosmetic damage, 2 of my sons had to stop unexpectedly when a Mercedes came into their lane on a switch back and did kind of an Artie Johnson ( Rowan and Martins laugh in) tip over. It added to some saddle bag cover damage and put a little marks on the bar end's, brake levers and mirrors. I was expecting to pay some damage as they were not likley to replace these, but they charged me for new. I was to tired to argue when we dropped the bikes off, but I am going to follow up.

They are about a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport. If I get the damage issue resolved, yes I would use them again.

It's the Lucomagno pass, in Swiss. A very very nice road (graet asphalt, great curves, great panorama)!

Bye, Luca

Wow, Luca! Thanks! I ordered the rear wheel roundel gizmo from Keith Haynes in Austrailia last weekend, got it yesterday. Today I ask a question and get an answer from Italy! Got to LOVE living with all this technology!

ps: really like the paint job on your bike! It's sweet.

great pics, great reminder of a great trip.

I did the High Alpine Adventure a couple years ago, and can't wait to do it again....with the wife this time, and on a GS again.

Here are some additional videos.

Yes this is a 2 way road, The Kaiser Strauss in Italy to be exact. Built so Wilhelm Kaiser to move his troops south in WW 1. Someone commented the rock walls were scary, to the contrary, they stay put, the cars, and 2000 foot drop offs are much scarier.

Traffic in the Alps.

No that is NOT dirt in the road, note that there are NO fences along the roads.

Can you say hairpins?? This was a mile from one of our hotels.

Now try it with Cobble stone pavement.

My favorite way to pass!!
Done at less than 30 MPH

After crossing the pass, you come into town on Main street!!

Look at scenery...... watch road, scenery.............road, scenery.............road, scenery.............road, you can miss a view, but you will be part of the scenery if you miss a corner!!

The Alps and Pyrenees are both incredible riding areas. I live in the East, and have WVa and the Blue Ridge area close by, but the motorcycle friendly culture and perfect pavement of Europe are hard to beat. Can't wait to go back!

I read only now, i was in France (on my bike, of course )....
I think forums like this one are the best side of internet, especially when animated by very nice people like here.
I'm very happy to be in some way useful to the community (even if in minimal part).

p.s. thank you for your compliments!

p.p.s. if/when you'll decide to have a ride on Alps, i'll be very glad to be your touristic-oenological guide!!

Greetings, Luca
