I would say it's time to upgrade to 1150 cc hardware. Build a sleeper.

Are the engine cases the same on the 850's as the 1150's?

Maybe you would just have to bore out the bosses for the cylinders.

Man what a nightmare I hope I never have to see that in real life on my own bike.But considdering he only payed $1000.Cant he replace the whole engine with a secondhand one of a GS maybe there must be some of those engines around.
