BoxerCup Results and New K12S Cup

Greetings,

Some info on the BoxerCup and the New K1200R Cup>!

Hinterreiter wins the 2004 BoxerCup - Gwen Giabbani takes full points for the first time in Valencia.

DearMr. Foster,

Ready for the final ride? At the end of the last MotoGP weekend, the wild horde of R 1100 S flat twins hit the racetrack for the last time before a truly sensational backdrop. On a total distance of 4005 metres, the technically demanding track offered outstanding grip and countless opportunities for messing up the ideal line.

And the race is off. A leading group quickly formed up consisting of Legrelle (45), Mertens (21), Panichi (99), Parriott (46) and Gwen Giabbani (71). What a thrilling race it was. Three top riders are out of luck this time and drop out of the race: Roberto Panichi, Stéphane Mertens and Thomas Hinterreiter. This meant the road was open for Giabbani (71) and Legrelle (46) who truly chased each other over the race track. Two rounds before the end, Giabbani rode a better line in the Curva Aspar and then never gave up his lead until he saw the chequered flag to take his first victory of the season. José Nion (18) came in an uncontested third.

Even after his unlucky dropout in Valencia, the overall winner of the BMW BoxerCup 2004 is Thomas Hinterreiter of the BMW Motorrad Austria Team Hinterreiter. In the toughly contested R 1100 S brand cup he made it to the winner´s podium six times! In Le Mans and Assen he was the first to cross the finish line. He already secured victory at the 7th race in Brno, Czech Republic. His result: 132 points which puts him clearly ahead of the runner-up Brian Parriott (117 points) and Markus Barth (108 points).

In the young and wild category (up to 21 years) - who rode their own competition at the BoxerCup 2004 - the Briton Richard Cooper (47) of the BMW Motorrad Great Britain Team was the overall winner. After his 5. place in Valencia he totalled 151 points and was the uncontested winner of the YoungStar category.

Following 4 exciting international BoxerCup years, BMW Motorrad is already rearming. Next year the brand new K 1200 R power roadster will demonstrate its sports potential in its own brand cup. Currently 7 races are planned in the exciting MotoGP setting. One race will be held in the US. So the latest four-cylinder bikes are set to continue the decades of motorsports tradition of the white and blue brand. The unmistakable appearance of the new BMW K 1200 R, its extreme power potential and the innovative chassis will make it a real attention-grabber on the international racetracks

wow, they are going to use the R, not the S...seems counterproductive to have so much power only to fight the wind without a fairing.

BMW Roundel Show Yer Scoot!

Greetings Repoe,

They want to show off the technology.

BTW, this camshaft delay thing is PR Speak and has nothing to do with the real reasons the bike is delayed!

dare we ask or even speculate as tot he real reason.

as for using the R versus the S...i think it is one way of already having a list of reasons as to why the bestest bike of all time isnt breaking lap times of any other class of pro racing out there...

Long List!

Greetings,

All I can say is that the bike has some issues that are being worked on as we speak. Two major issues but not limited to are the transmission and the low RPM ghost like symptomology>drivability.

I personally experienced these items everytime I ride the KS and I feel that these items if not remedied will kill sales and they (BMW) realize that too.

AMEN

Any idea where the US race will be held?
Likely Daytona.. Mildly hopeful they would include it in the GP weekend at Laguna..

My bet is GP at Laguna, but it's just a guess. America is such a one-off compared to the rest of the GP rounds that it might diverge.

I think, other than a lack of sponsorship-holding fairing space, the R makes a ton of sense. The Boxer Cup was very recognizable because they were boxers. The Inline-4 cup is inherently less unique and attention drawing. Showing the very slow set motor and main frame spars AND the Duo-lever makes a lot of sense. You have to market to your strengths, or at least your differences. This possibly falls into both categories. A lack of fairing is no big deal if everyone else is in the same boat. No need to replace and repaint one when they're dropped either. Good deal. Plus, a large-displacement naked spec class hasn't been done before, even though BOTT approached one sometimes.

It's unique, and fast. Smart move on BMW's part.

BMW riders for the most part can overlook some little problems and still enjoy the bike. Sport Bike testers arent so forgiving though. They will nit pick every little detail until the bike is perfect. Just read some of the reviews about the K1200S. It is a very good thing that BMW is sorting these issues out before the official release. They are saving their butts by doing this.

I'll be sorry to see the Boxer Cup series retire to the history books. The new kid on the BMW block is the 1200 S, so naturally that will get it's own Cup. And that is a good thing. It will put pressure on BMW to tighten things up a bit with the 1200 S. They certainly don't want anyone saying, "Good to see you guys still have that Broken Cup series going on!".

The week before Valencia, Main Line BMW had an open house and Boxer Cup racer Nate Kern was there. Two things I won't forget. First, he had never ridden Le Mans before, but he knew it from playing one of the Play Staion games that had a very realistic rendition of the course. I kid you not - he said he felt really confident in knowing the course and the game he played on the computer really helped in knowing the sequence of corners and their braking points (he figures he did about 3000 laps on the computer). But the computer track was a bit too engrained in his short and long term memory banks. It seems as though the game had a slight error in the placement of a tree and its corresponding shadow approaching one of the first corners. Nate used that tree as a braking point on the computer game but in reality, the tree is a bit further in toward the corner. First "real time" practice lap for Nate saw him getting into a real "I gotta get into the pits to change my pants" moment as he realized the tree was not were it was supposed to be and he was going to over- cook the corner. He did no better the second time around - he was still waiting for that tree/shadow to hit the brakes. In fact it took quite a few laps before he got it right.

The other thing I'll remember - I asked him, with his experience riding a lot of other more dedicated race bikes, what it was like to race an 1100 S. He winced a bit and said, "It's like swinging three bats".

It wasn't much of a surprise to see them choose the 1200R over the 1200S for the race series. The naked Bike racing is taking off all over the world. The Aprilia Tuono racing series is very popular for the racers and spectators. BMW is probley just wanting to jump on the popularity of these races. I think its a pretty smart move. I would put my money on seeing the US race at Laguna Seca.

BMW Roundel Good Deal!

Greetings,

I had the pleasure of seeing Nate at a few BoxerCup and "Other" races.

I really think this guy has some terrific skills. He knows where the edge is and he always brings back his ride in one piece.

I would like to have seen him on a more competitive ride in the BoxerCup this year.

I am glad that he was also at Main Line BMW, one of the top BMW dealers in the US. The owners there always put out consistant numbers as far as sales and their service is very good. I refer many enthusiasts there. Having Nate there for the "Open House" was a good move!

It would be good to see Nate hooked up with the K12R and a good sponsor for the new K12 Series.

Good luck Nate!

BMW Roundel Daytona

Greetings,

Daytona, 2005!

In 2004 there was almost 2 BC races in the US.

At the last moment BMW Motorrad Motorsports pulled the plug on Laguna Seca. BMW Motorrad USA alledgedly dropped the ball~?
