Unhappy Speedo gone haywire

The speedo on my 2001 R1100S is on the blink. It reads a flickery 20 MPH at any speed. What activates the speedo? Is it magnets? Could I have a short or bad connection? My bike does have ABS and the idicator lights are normal. I just topped of my brake fluid pryor to this happening. My brakes seem to be operating normally. I was afraid the computer would read the wheels as locked up or something. Any insight would be aprecieted... ~Paul

Sounds like the exact same problem I had. A new sensor in the rear wheel solved my problem.

speedo reads the black plug that goes vertically into the rear drive next to the vent. ABS reads the horizontal plug that goes through the rear drive up closer to the brake.

First step, remove the screw that holds the speedo sensor in place. See if it is loose. Remove the sensor gingerly and clean any goo/gunk off the probe. Seat it back in place and reinsert the screw. make sure it goes all the way down and the screw is tight.

Follow the cable from the sensor and see if any connections have worked loose or have corrosion on the contacts. Clean them up and give it a ride. If it still reads goofy, then take it to the dealer.

Dunno - mine does that every time I give it a good hosing. An hour-long natural blow dry usually fixes it up jest fine!

Hey Rapid, I'm here! I never went away. I've just been spending lots of time on my aprilia and riding the desert on the 426. I do miss my S riding buddies though. We need to hook up for a ride soon. Maybe go see Jeff or somthin. ~P

Here's a link to the UK site for 1100s where a similar problem is described.

Also remember some comments about chaffed wires where the main harness crosses the front subframe under the plastic.
