So Cal Tech Session anyone?
The 'Vibes make me unhappy' thread got me thinking so I searched but found nothing for us southern California riders. Any L.A. area guys ever gotten together for a tech session?
I'm not due for any scheduled service for several months at least but I'd be cool to get together to learn/see about valve adjustments and TB syncs. |
At least you should get a bunch of peeps together, and *swap* bikes for a ride.
NONE of them will be the same. Wheird. Some vibey, some not. Some will feel heavy, some will feel nimble. Fun game. |
Ha! Why bother? My S seems to have a different mood every other time I ride. :p
|
moody when you ride her? ...surely must be female
|
There is a reason why my wife calls my bike "that blue German Bit*h" . No question about them being female.
|
Sergio,
what do you mean by a tech day. Do you mean to meet in one place and modify our bikes or do you mean discussing what we did to our bikes,( in our area we have airhead tech days that do both). If its just knowledge of what we did to our bike and ideas I would suggest riding with some of our forum members in the LA area and you will be blessed with more knowledge than you can shake a stick at. Every time I ride with the SoCal boys I learn something new. cya jeff |
With my other BMW group of friends, we get together every now and again and work on our bimmers. Typically it's standard maintenance stuff but at times we'll mod our cars as well. We'll pick someone's house (usually that has a big driveway). Over the year's, it's gotten to the point where I do all the standard maintenance on both my bimmer and my wife's bimmer.

I like the idea, been wanting to do my own valve job for sometime now but too afraid to do invasive procedure. i have had history of open things up and left a few items behind when i put them back.
|
The main point of this besides the camaraderie that inevitably arises from gearheads getting togther is of course the expansion of one's personal knowledge.
I've read through the oil head valve adjustment for dummies several times and it seems quite simple. Then again, I've had plenty of experience adjusting valves on my previous German car. It had twelve valves to adjust so eight seems like a snap although I haven't tinkered in valve adjustments in over ten years. |
lets do it.
Please give advance notice so I can make the trip. cya jeff |
I'm up for it too. Would be a good chance to have Jeff give us all a valve job. I've heard that's his specialty. :D Actually I'm versed in the standard valve adjust and TB synch and would be glad to share the knowledge and/or pick up some tips from other members. I'm located in Camarillo if that works as a meeting spot. Maybe all those that are interested can give their location and decide on the best meeting place that works for everyone. Just in case I'll make sure my bike is already tuned up so I can be the beer biotch.
|
We did this with my Guzzi and VW friends.
The trick is having lots of people who know what the hell they're doing and lots of tools. Five guys who have never done a valve job getting together to try it fot the first time is a scary thought. Scarier than one doing it by himself. |
I'm right next to Long Beach although I have to check with my better half to see when we could do this. :D
|
I have three comments:
1. just give me advanced warning. 2. Moki, remember you've got a date with me and the big guy. 3. Scott, for a guy who is well versed in lube job technology you should talk.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/.../eat_arrow.gif cya jeff |
i have a crescent wrench, a pipe wrench and 2/3rds of a roll of duct tape.
can i come? ....brad |
But if you bring the pipe, we won't need you to roll for us! :p
|
very true, and that's why i'm also bring that cresent.
it'll give us something to eat when the munchies hit. ........brad ps: i went to high school with cheech marin, but really, it's not my fault. |
I have twinmax and all tools for the valve job. No jack though. I live in Seal Beach. I can host but it will have to be sometime in April. (sound like a listing for CE from Craigslist.com)
I like Camarillo too, great roads to ride afterward. |
actually, i've been wanting to have a "i'll show you mine if you show me yours" toolkit meeting for a while.
we used to do that when i raced enduros. guys would craft/graft really nice tools (space and weight were the premium) and assemble a fanny-pack toolkit that covered just about every head-scratching trail-side repair problem. we'd often burn up hotel time with "show & tell" on toolkits. usually you'd see something you wanted to copy. or learned something trick about a procedure. one of those guys, chris carter, went on to start Motion Pro, which is probably the coolest motorcycle tool company in the world. anyway, after laughing hysterically at what "bm-vee" gave me for a toolkit, i assembled my own. i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one. i'd like to see everybody "whip out" their tool kit in the driveway at this proposed tech session, sp we can all poke through them for ideas. i'm sure i'm missing some important things. ...brad |
I have room to host this TS. I gots a 4-car carport with only one car currently taking up space... no jack though. Since I've never delved into repairing the bike I've never needed to buy one. I'm sure I could use this an excuse to get one. :D
|
I would be interested in attending this event provide my weekend is not full of other junk.
|
I guess the question is if anyone will be needing anything to be done in the next coming weeks or months? If not, we can always just do a valve adj. or tb sync just for the sake of learning how to do it.
|
I need to do a 18k service in the next month or so. I have never adjuted the valves or done a tb sync.
|
LOL, us noobies will have a blast experi... err, working on your bike!
|
"Actually I'm versed in the standard valve adjust and TB synch ..."
no no no, you'll have to learn on you're own bikes whilst you watch Moto do mine...I be in the lawnchair on the driveway apron... |
I'm game...
Mine's not due for service for a bit..but I'll attend..and have some tech experiance under my belt both on my R1100S, and on my current R1150R...and I can BS with the best of 'em. -arbi |
can I bring my plasma cutter and my smoke wrench?
|
I'll bring the camera.
I know something good will come out of this. jeff |
If you bring the camera and we time this right (summer weather), you could get some pretty good shots of scantily clad women sunbathing on the beach by my place. :D
|
It would be pretty trick to watch a bunch of you guys do a "VALVE JOB" in your driveways.... Didn't realize that there were that many people with that much talent and facilities in their posession.
|
sorry... just having a piss-assed day today..
|
Talent? Who me? :p
|
My time here is short, so I'll ask Motoyoyo call the time, place and date for this event.
Jeff, as for the dat, I will call the big guy to see his availability. We will let you know asap. |
OK guys, I'm up for hosting this event in Camarillo. My good bud Moki is here from Hawaii for the next two weekends, so it would be nice to get him involved if we can. Easter is on the 27th, so maybe Saturday the 26th would be good. This is great, it will give me an excuse to clean up my mess in the garage. Man, you can't believe all the krap you accumulate over time. I need to dig a pit so I can stash all this stuff and mke for easy lube and oil changes. Anyway, I'll have two bays completely clear in my garage and plenty of driveway space for a hoard (or is that a gaggle) of Pelican's. I was by Home Depot the other day and saw some industrial looking floor fans for cheap, so we should be able to cool down bikes that want a valve adjust fairly quick.
I have all the stuff for tire change and balance too if anyone wants to go for it. I'll have lots of tools, an air compressor, a floor jack for those with a center stand and I'l pick up a lift stand from sears or costco too. Lots of coolers with ice and some beach chairs for Rapido to set up in the corner too. Got tunes in the garage so bring your fav cd's. Plenty of space here for anyone that wants to spend the night also. Lot's of couches inside and lawn space with a firepit outside if anyone wants to try out their camping skills. Good news too, Hwy 33 is scheduled to reopen in a few days so a great ride awaits for those that want to strecth their rubbers...uhh, that reminds me, Shannon get yer butt out here and bring your girlfriend Steve too. Let me know what days/weekends are good for y'all. Oh ya, there's a bbq, pool and jacuzzi out back so bring yer meat/beer/sodas/swimsuits/wives/girlfriends/pets and don't forget your R1100S |
A couple pics of Hotel Yoyo. Come one, come all...oh ya and shannon too. :D

Scott, you definitely have more driveway space than me although my backyard is a little bigger... :p :D

Awesome Sergio! I bet the view is perkier there too. Not going to catch many thong shots in my yard, at least not ones you want to remember. It don't matter to me where this ends up, I just thought I would be the first to put in a solid offer. Camarillo might turn out to be a bit out of the way for most of the LA folks and that beach shot look real sweet.
|
The beach doesn't come alive til that burm comes down... I figure in the next few months. Camarillo seems like a fun ride to me though. :D
|
26 is good for me. i need to learn the valve yob.
|
nice digs Scott !
