BWM System Cases
 

Some info on a modification to the System cases that may be of interest. The large System case and the smaller System "city" case are identical except for the outer lids. I purchased the "city" cases with my bike and ordered the larger outer lids. The hinges are only pop riveted on. I drilled these out, sized the holes, and pressed in threaded inserts. Using security machine screws (which require a special screwdriver)I can now easily change the size of my cases in 5 minutes. This mod will save you a lot of $ over two complete sets of cases.

I also bought the city lids. Bike came with those BIG lids. I use the city lids for around town and going to work. Plenty of space.
Left the inside half of the hinge riveted, and used stainless steel #6 bolts with lock-nuts to allow quick swapping.

Will a helmet still fit in the bag with the city lid on?

Paul -- out of curiosity, how much did the city lids cost? The local dealers are quoting $77 each...

Steve - I purchased the System "City" cases complete with the bike and obtained the larger system lids afterwards. The larger lids cost me $118.75 each, so $77 seems like a good price to me. I spent about $30 on the threaded inserts and security screws. Still a better deal than a second complete set of cases. Less to store when not in use as well.

Have you seen the beetle bags from Corbin??

I was going to get the beetle cases but unfortunately you can't store a helmet in them. They are infinitely better looking on the bike than the bmw bags, which i bought.

The Corbin beetle bags do look good on the R1100S. The shape of the bags seems to be very complimentary to the overall style of the bike. I did consider them, but as they are a bolt-on installation you lose the versatility of the pop-on/pop-off stock BMW cases. Since I ride about 70% without the cases, it really wasn't an good option for me. In fact, since I purchased the Bagster tank cover with it's integrated tank bag mounting system I find that I use that the most when my carrying needs are light.

Does anybody know if GIVI cases would work on a R1100S. I investigated them for a ZX-11 and realy like the product. Still undecided on bike choice between ZX-11, Ducati and R1100S. What to chose? Brute force, sexiness or bulletproof reliability? Decisions, decisions...

I have a set of Givi bags mounted on my "other" bike, a Suzuki Bandit. They are great cases, lots of room and great quality. The mounting arrangement is extremely secure, almost overkill. I am sure that Givi would have a mounting kit available for the R1100S but I think that you will find that they may hang out farther from the bodywork than the stock set-up. If you check on the mounting kit availability and are interested in a used Givi setup, send me an e-mail. Good luck on your bike selection but you already know my choice!

While Givi makes a great set of bags, I don't think they'd fit as well as the BMW System Bags. A friend of mine has Givi's on his '88 ZX-10 and they stick out a long ways. As well, because of Givi's mounting system the bags aren't held in place as securely as you hope...they bounce around a bit at highway speeds +. I find that the BMW system bags stay secure at speeds beyond the 140kph that BMW suggests as an upper limit for travelling with the bags installed.

GIVI Mounts for R1100S
 

GIVI makes a tail and side bag mount for the R1100S. See RL Motorcycles for the mounts that fit. I believe the tail rack mount is a part number F681. I just bought one.

I just ordered the mount. However, I use the EMGO tail truck for $60 shipped as my trunk. I like it, plents of sixe for my 'on off' gear while traveling. Heated stuff, food, etc.

system cases and givi top box
 

i have a set and think that wswartzel has them too.

at least i can fit 2 helmets into the givi top box, so it has replaced the side cases when running errands and around town, in fact for the 2008 unrally in oregon i went with just the top case and left the side bags at home (the tent was bungeed down)
