BMW vs. BMW!?!?
I ride regularly with a collection of BMW’s, Duc’s, Honda’s, etc. and an MV Agusta F4 if you can believe it. Mine is the beautiful R1100S, no surprise! Lately I have noticed a lot of BMW’s, R1100R’s, R1100S’s (way cool!) and K1200RS’s hmmm… Now I expect the usual bickering between makes of Ducati vs. BMW and Honda vs. Kawasaki but I have been hearing a lot of BMW vs. BMW! The clasic battle betrween "airheads" and "oilheads" is as old as the first oilhead. As has been the tale of "R" vs. "K" but this is more specific. The “K1200RS'’ and “R1100S'’ have gone to the corners and are taking the ring faster than a lap at the world super bike championships. Many a bad pass has been made in trying to prove the better bike.
The “S” & the “K” are neck and neck for the most part in highway travel. The "K" does have the advantage in top end. Leave the straight and narrow and venture into the twisties and it is all “S”. You could even say that the “S’s” with the shorter paralever and “better riders” are leaving many a Duc in the dust. I hate to admit it but John Berry (an R1100R rider) leaves us all in the dust. That is just plain skill and experience. But after that what is left? The “S” or the “K”??? You tell me… Chris out. |

While the R1100S is my first Beemer. I was never a fan of the boxers. I was always a big K-bike fan, ever since the '85 K100. I saw one on display at the Flughauf in Frankfurt and it was love at first sight. However, my pocket book could only handle an Yamaha XJ900. In the few short months that I've had the S, I've come to appreciate the pull of the twin. I was torn between the R1100S and the K1200RS. Price was the only thing that kept me from the big K. I don't regret getting the R1100S. Realistically there is no better bike than a Beemer, so does it matter which Beemer you've got? I don't think so. It's all a matter of personal preference...some like red heads, others like blondes...and you can ride 'em all.

Hi.
I have had my R1100S for about a year. I am a convert from a Honda VFR750 and my R1100S is a far more competent bike in the twisties and in everything else. I have tried the K1200RS and it is a great bike on the highway, but thats it. I would not trade mine for one. Bent |

In the interest of serving this BB site (tongue firmly planted in cheek), I am SO impressed with the BMW product that I traded in my Ducati 996 for a shiny new graphite K1200RS to complement my R1100S. Boy, do they look positively "bad" together in my garage. I don't have enough miles on the Sport Barge to really compare yet, but the K IS quite impressive. Would I have it over the S? Never. I like the twins too much. But, it is very smooth and has incredible balance and thoroughbred feel to it. Like the S, it somehow "loses" a lot of weight on the road.
Don't miss a chance to ride one if you ever get the opportunity. Mal happy in my Beemerdom |
