Call me crazy or whatever you'd like, but it seems odd to me to expect a manufacturer to build provisions into a motor to run in positions/attitudes so far from the intended. The only answer here would be a dry sump system as in the XR250 mentioned earlier. But even in a tip over, if the pick-up sees air, it's all over.
As for checking oil levels, try to develope a habit of giving it a quick glance when you fill up with gas, or add it to your pre-ride proceedure. I'm a VW technician by trade, and as we always explain to new owners, especially air-cooled cars, oil is the life-blood of the engine. Check it often, and if you see the light, turn the engine off immediately as it may already be too late. Just my 2 cents. Tom ------------------ |
Tom,
Sounds good in theory, but just doesn't work in practice. Not on these motors. The oil hides in the oil cooler, or somewhere, and doesn't show in the glass, especially for a short stop like a fill up. And you don't want to over fill it, either, which can happen if you don't allow sufficient time for the level to stabilize. It'll burn it off and carbon up your top end and pollute your oil. It's a problem. Maybe the solution is to run it hard on break in, but not for long periods. That way not much oil will be used between one day and the next. |
