spark plug covers

I have lost 4 spark plug covers while riding my R1100S. Has any one had this same problem? Has any one found a solution which will keep these things on without glue?

Hey Eddy,

glad you found the boards again. I'll be following this one too, as I've lost one the same way.

Ideas anyone?

roger

Hey Guys;

Its an easy fix I lost one when I first bought the bike until a friend
at the dealership showed me how to put them on.
Always make sure you install them this way and you won't have any more problems.Start out buy making sure that the little rubber gromits are in the holes in the valve covers, and then push the cover on and and you will hear a snap and the front part of the cover, that tells you the cover is in place

Thumbs up

Greetings,
I lost one a while ago and decided to go with the factory CF covers. Well, these are way too expensive to lose because of a poor design by BMW. I ended up safety wiring the front of the cover to the head. It was easy and it looks good. If you want pics, Email me.

Thanks Roger its good to be back. Tom thank you for the info I will try your method when my 2 new spark plug covers arrive. The new style don't seem to fit as snug as the old style (the ones with silver writing).

I thought I remember hearing about a leash in an old thread. Unfortunately this wouldn't keep it on, but would save it from getting lost if it does pop off. If memory serves, there is clip on the cover that one could attach a leash and loop around the spark wire. Should be able to get it entirely hidden and the only problem is the heat from the engine. Maybe a piece of wire could serve here.

That's my barbaric, fix anything with duct tape opinion.
Good luck

I've had mine on and off several times, including painting them...

By always following the rubber (rear) end first rule I have never had a problem getting a secure positive feeling fit and have yet to lose one.

If you try to clip the front first the rubber tabs won't necessarily be IN the holes the way they should be even though they seem "in".

If you have problems with this I'd build up the "length" of the rubber tabs by using some RTV. This should make the fit tighter and by then using the rubber end in first rule make for an even more secure system.

Rapt is absolutely correct on this –*mounting them this way precludes any losing of them later.

jeff
has bought a second set of them, but knows *exactly* where the old ones are...( but not which drawer)....

seen this mod in the Wunderlich catalogue and it works well
where the spark plug cable goes in behind the cover, drill 2 x 3mm
holes in the cover, one either side of the cable, use a black cable tie and cable tie the spark plug lead to the cover(loose fit is best)
if the cover pops off it flaps about around your foot, but is still attached to your bike
