JonyRR:

You can keep all the Beryllium you want. Since it's a proven cause of leukemia, I don't want to have anything to do with the stuff. To that end there is a BeryliCo spanner wrench sitting on the bottom of the mid-Atlantic care of you-know-who, dumped off SSBN 655 around 1978. Noncorrosive, so it's probably still there, pristine and deadly as ever.

Beryllium won't harm you unless you grind or cut it and come into contact with the dust. You can handle the wrenches all day any you'll be find.

Did a bunch of tank work when I was a junior pipe fitter. Spark free is a good thing when your in a tank that used to hold gasoline.

Not what I heard. I seem to remember that the aerospace industry used to have all manner of nonmagnetic, nonsparking berylium-copper screwdrivers and wrenches, then a bunch of people got cancer and the tools disappeared. Something about skin acids leaching out the berylium and letting it pass through the skin into the blood stream.

Personally, I'm not going to take the risk. Aluminum-copper is not as light, but it does the other stuff just as well and doesn't cost a bucket of money.

I'm thinking of having my bike frame and fasteners all made from Nitinol. That way, if I ever have another git off, I can just take the bike, and a nice warm torch to it, and it'll all go back to its original shape. what do you guys think?

Yes, Moybin, I WAS being a (inject sound of abject horror here and the exclamation 'NOT ME!!!").
Berylliosis is the technical term for beryllium poisioning due to ingestion via osmosis or inhalation. Supposedly, prolonged fondling of same DOES result in the condition, as does even minute inhalation of dust.
Light and stiff, though. I always wondered why they didn't powdercoat the raw pieces (anodizing don't workee so good).
Some things are much more possible than practical. LIke getting serious horsepower out of a 259-series BMW oilhead engine *grin*.
And yes, an R1100S ALREADY has enough power to get one into trouble or killed...but too much is almost enough. (add nitromethane
