Won't Start

Little Help,

Parked my bike after a ride. I tried to start it for the return trip. It would turn over, but wouldn't start?

Yes, the Tank is full and the kick stand is up.

Any Ideas??

-X-Triple

Check this:

99 R1100S No Fuel Pump Action No Ticky No Laundry!

Sounds like a bad fuel pump relay (or ground) That might account for the low fuel light weirdness!

If you think it might be the relay, I can pull mine after work tomorrow so you can try it in your bike.

Thumbs up I get a little help from my friends....

Hi Guys,

I only have 3500 miles. Do I need a Valve Job?? Don't I do that at 6000 miles? I assume I have a spark because it is turning over?

Andrew I will go over and pop the plastic off tomorrow to see if there is a loose connection? I also think this may be a warranty issue?

Thanks fellow "Wingers",

Virtually no chance of it needing a valve adjust, much less a valve job. Spark and turning over have nothing to do with each other though, so you can't really draw a conclusion there. Still, it would be good to know if you had any spark. First thing to check once you have the motor spinning.

Maybe a tankful of bad gas? Run some Techron Fuel System Cleaner through it after you get it riunning again.

Does the fuel pump cycle on when you turn the key?

Yeah,

I just filled it up with High Octane. When I put the key in and turn it on, all I hear is the Servo whining and no whirling of fuel pump.

I'II go over today to see what the problem is, should be able to diagnosis it better today.

X-T,

It must still be under warranty, right? Just my opinion, but just have them look at the problem if so.

He could get the bike to a dealer, but that would probably mess up our plans for a ride this weekend!

Are you around on Saturday?

No it does not.

My guess is that he has a bad ground, because:

A) He's had some "hard starting" issues recently: Sporadic problem.

B) Recently, the low fuel light was flickering on/off, even with a full tank: Sporadic problem.

C) He keeps his bike outside, and although covered, we've had something like 24" of rain in the last two months. Eventually moisture can wreak havoc on less than perfect mechanical connections.

I would first check that the ground is tight on the battery.

Question: Is there a ground mounting point for the wiring harness on the Right side of the frame, about 6 inches down from the steering stem?

FYI - the bike, when running, runs perfectly. It idles eerily smoothly at around 900rpm, and makes absolutely none of the "they all do that" noises that most S bikes make.

I'm riding Saturday but nowhere near here. I'm going to upsate NY to visit my dad(w/R1150R) and we're riding somewhere...

He just moved back to the east coast this spring, so that's been sucking up all my riding time.

I do hope to meet up with you guys again soon though...

Question

Update,

I go to my in-laws and pull all of the fuses on the left hand side. None are burnt out. The horn does not work. I found out it was a broken connection versus a fuse.

I try to start it, same problem as last night. I am just about to give up.

I get on it and push the kick stand harder ( Maybe NinerMatt was on to something?). Vrooom or more like, Baaaaaaaaa!

The "S" started! The pump start whirling, and all is good. I think Andrew is right? Must be a ground, switch, or maybe a Bad
(Foster Rad) Chip??

I left it there, I will be going by tonight to ride it home, hopefully? I will study it some more and hopefully continue our plan to ride this Saturday.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas!!!

X-Triple

relocate the sidestand and clutch interlok right into the round parts bin.
I hate nanny-bikes.

Agreed.

Couple of questions:

Does the side stand switch cut-out the fuel pump?

X's starter motor turns; dosn't the sidestand switch kill the starter?

Thumbs up

I guess we will chock this up to " Ghost in the Machine".

She started on the first crank. Go Figure, and she seems to start more smoothly?? Doesn't make sense.

I try to pop-off the plastic and check all grounds.

Thanks for everyone's guidance.
