I was on a 100-mile return trip last night when something odd finally happened with my bike. At about 70 mph, the front of the bike (not sure if it was the engine or the telelever) made this low resonance chirpy whirr. Coupled with smell of burnt rubber, I thought I was pretty much screwed as a few thoughts passed through my mind. As soon as I decelerated, it seemed to have disappeared, minus the scent of burnt rubber, which continued for a few miles.
1. As I have been meaning to get to changing the alternator belt (way past due -- no, way way past due) It sounded and smelled like the alternator belt had gone, burned up on the pulleys, and thrashed itself into the little cover. So do I have enough battery to get home? 2. Roached bearing? 53K miles. I could see a wheel bearing going bad at this time. There's no loud noise, or other bad feedback. The smell could be the bearing seals getting hot and smoldering. . . I made it home. 80 miles being certain to use blinkers as efficiently as possible in case it was the belt. But today, the bike was fine and made it to work and back without a skip. I checked the belt just now. It's in fine shape. I checked the wheel bearings. No problem. Smooth sailing, no gritty or flat-spotted feeling. 3. Was it just a chunk of road debris that got caught in the fender? There's no apparent new damage to the fender. I have an aftermarket fender that is thicker than the stock one, but for the noise and the smell that was generated, it's hard to believe it survived the instance. Is there something else I'm missing? I can't think of what would create that vibration and burnt rubber smell. Last edited by Sideshow_S; 08-14-2006 at 04:59 PM.. |

There's two things I can't stand, the sound of a woman screaming and the smell of burnt rubber.

Sounds very similar to an experience I had a couple of years ago in Pa. It was a hot and sunny day, and I accelerated from a stop was probably up to about 40. All of a sudden I heard this loud crunch, and got a vibration in the front end. I slowed cautiously and pulled to the shoulder of the road. Not having a center stand on the Replika to spin the front tire, I wiggled, shook. kicked and inspected the front end, couldn’t find anything, so I cautiously got back on and started to roll to a chunk-chunk sound. I stopped again and this time the tire was in a position to see a chunk of tar that had come loose and affixed itself to the tire. It took some time with the Swiss army knife to remove it from the tread. And a few miles until it stopped picking up small stones and running them through the inside of the fender.

Seems to me that if you can smell it it is coming from in front of you. If it is coming from you, the smell is behind you.

Change your alternator belt. You missed something.
