No try, do or not do
|
i just bought the Laser cans, and was wondering about the restrictors that say "racing only" in the paperwork, i assumed mine werent in, because there was nothing that looked removable. i read in a previous post that these restrictors are actually welded in, and can only be removed by drilling through the spot welds. is this the case? if so what is the best way to get them out? any thoughts on what the dB is without the cat and no baffles? i see the K1200R Laser Race system claims 125dB max, thats pretty loud. anybody have a picture of what actually comes out? i thought it was just the small tobe in the center, but now i am thinking it is the whole piece that comes right to the end of the cans?

If you were to flip the cans over before they are mounted, you'll see the spot welds--one for each baffle. The baffles are pressure fit into place before getting tacked. Drilling out the spot weld won't allow the baffle to fall right out, instead you will have to wrestle with them to get them out using a broom handle or something similar.
I just put cans on my bike too, to finally complete the system I started a year ago with a cat eliminator. I did drill the out welds, but left the baffles in place for now. Some say the bike is way too load without the baffles. I have yet to hear mine without. It sounds plenty good the way it is. At about 4900 rpm I'd swear I'm gonna pop the tiles off the inside of the Hollund Tunnel every morning--resonance is awesome.

My Laser race system (full) is too loud, IMO. I'm still looking for dB killers; I've never seen how they install, but I'd like to take the sound down a few dB.

Greetings Delta,
Here the LASER BC-II system DB-Killer that we make. You need two. They insert into the outlets and are secured with a SS bolt, lockwasher and nut. Simple, tuneable (DB wise) and removable. Best!

Funny, I thought they'd be longer. Either way, I need to lose some amplitude, and it sounds like everyone that manages to get the factory-installed silencers out mangles them in the process!! I've PM'd you back, thanks again...

At least that's how it plays out in my head. It may involve some lube & a mallet... just like last year's anniversary with the missus... Does anyone have pics with the killers installed?

Have had them in my bike, but the 4200 rpm drone still was deafening and a headache starter after a few continuous hours on the bike. I found the biggest benefit was re-engineering the muffler hangers that bolts straight to the sub frame. I installed rubber grommets after modifying the hanger and it helped alot, but still too loud for a touring bike. Great intimidator on the track though.

I also have the laser and I wanted to make a little more noise and not have the extra holes in the outlets. I used a dremel tool with a carbide bit to gradually remove the inside of the baffle where it was spot welded. I then used a cold chisel to break the baffle loose and was able to use small vice grips to remove the baffle. Went back over the inside with very fine sandpaper to remove the rough places around the welds. Finished up with simi-chrome and now have polished outlets without the extra holes.
I really like the sound as well as the fit and finish! Enjoy your pipes! TP |

If I understood Mr. Foster correctly, whether the db killers are in or out should make little or no difference power-wise as the Laser cans are a zero-backpressure system regardless of the db-killers. It's been a while since I pulled mine and installed the chip, but if this info is incorrect Mr. Foster will be informing us shortly.

i ended up removing them by using an aluminum "dowel" and just wiggling it until the spot weld broke, i would have drilled them out, but they weren't even in the same spot on each can, and i wasn't into the assymetric look on my hot new exhaust. they dont seem much louder without them in, so for now i will leave them out.
