Thanks Dr, I have no doubt that I will have a ball on the bike once I get it...honestly I am still perplexed, no astonished, with the lack of information available from BMW [like failure of R1200S PDFs on BMW site to open...K bike PDFs open not R12Ss] and all the suppositions about what is standard and what is optional...not the attention to detail that I would expect from the Teutonic brain..Example: your "Phil, as has been mentioned multiple times, the bike can be ordered with a 2.62." is in conflict with Steve's " The 2.62 is standard, and you can't order the "alternative rear axle," which is the 2.75." Both of you have a lot of BMW background and yet we get divergent information on something as basic as the final drive ratio.

BMW is not new at producing motorcycles..ya think they would be fastidious about channeling us the mechanical details on their bikes..hell, many dealers know less than those on the forum...and most BMW pilots seem to be VERY interested in details..ultimately you are buying a product, an expensive product that you life may depend on, and should have sources of information from the manufacturer on which to make informed choices...it ain't so with BMW..

To me, admittedly a newbie to BMW, it is a very elitist attitude on the part of BMW that says: "Pay your money, be thankful we will sell you a bike and don't ask questions"...sigh...I will adjust, it just irks me...soory if I drifted off there folks..

OK, once again I'm confused. My bike's build sheet says it has the altrnative ratio. Which one IS that?? And, I read that it's stamped on the bottom of the housing. Is that correct?

Thanks.

Mal- look up from the bottom of your rear drive. There should be a 33/12 stamped into the metal = 2.75.

...what a bunch of flotsam! you guys...I want to know who's going to ride thier R12S at top speed more than a few times during ownership, outside of going to Bonneville, or on a track day?...who cares if it's 155 or 160?
I'm with the Doc on this one, this bike is stinkin' fast (and stable) and WAY MO' bike than the R11S ever was.
I am now a believer...

...on the boards as we speak...

But after riding the R12S, I'm not sure BB's wouldn't spoil it's perfection...purely speaking of course

sense or no sense

ck...I had to learn all over how to ride after riding an airhead S for near 25 years, then getting my R11.
If I got an R12, it would be the same thing again.

Was it Dick Mann that said "Riding a slow bike fast is much better than riding a fast bike poorly"...?
Something like that...makes sense to me.

I feel SOOOO much better.
That's EXACTLY what I said as a newb on this board and got flamed like a spad in front of manfred von richtoven for it.

it made me mad enough so I vowed never to ask the dealer or anyone else and just teach myself as I always have.
BMW's information dissemanation SUCKS.
and the new generation of canbus, BMW-K scoots is a worse black hole for valid infor than ever

and for all youze guyz that say 'just take it to the dealer, no idle adjust isn't a big deal'...I'll be hearing the screams of $2000.00 agony for a cpu that can't be reflashed anymore...about a day out of warranty..hehehehe.

Jony...I know a lot folks probably "lurk" on the forum..but damn; basic hard data and mechanical details should be at the core of ownership and this forum..where are you guys [gals] with detailed information? Why don't we/you challenge BMW for details? No, we garble about who is prettiest or fastest...ever wonder about the mechanics of the bikes? No speculation...factual as built data is needed or you are just along for the ride...literally..come on, a challenge to the folks on the forum...talk specs..not conjecture or just gleefully adding the newest "trick" item on the bike.. I will "ride for the brand" [western term] but only if it earns my loyalty...I believed and still believe that BMW is the Thinking Riders Bike...so you 'silver backs' out there on the forum prove me right with solid quantified objective information..

after almost a decade of the R259/R1100 series machines with both motronic 2.2 and 2.4 variantsw, there IS a sizable body of hard data to glean, and this board is the #1 source worldwide, as far as I can tell, but BMW does indeed make it very hard on us folks who want to do more than take it to the dealer (there are exactly 2 people in this world I trust to wrench on my scoot and one of 'em I look at in the mirror every morning)

The new engine management system on the 1200 machines, called 'BMW-K' is even more esoteric and black-box than before. I was discussing this at the local botique dealership. I remarked 'you can't even set the idle yourself anymore' and the salesperson got defensive and hostile on me so I changed the subject, but that attitude doesn't endear me to the new product.
it's the same trend in cars...'no user-servicable components inside'.
Oh well, at least you can adjust the valves yoruself...try THAT one on a ZX10R...
