dealer rip off reprise

i just got back from the "dealer" to get my free front Avon mounted, and guess what ? a totally different experience!!! i called ahead of time, they said to bring it down. i dropped off the wheel, and they said i could wait for it, so i browsed the shop (more about that in a bit) and in less than 20 minutes, they said my wheel was done. i didnt ask for a rush job, when i checked in Joe (Service manager) said they would get right on it. the phone survey indicated it would cost $40, and the final total!!! $34.80 what!!! i was baffled, how could the actual price be less than the OTP (over the phone) estimate? i asked if rear tires cost more than fronts, the answer, No. a much more pleasant dealer experience i must admit.
OH, I forgot to mention, this was a different dealer! the first "dealer" who had reamed me in my opinion was actually the local HD dealer who had given me a reasonable OTP quote, and then gouged me with additional charges, todays dealer? the local Ducati, Aprillia, Triumph, Suzuki shop (Jack Trebuor Motorcycles, Ledgewood) evidently more in tune with reality. Thanks guys, you have made a friend and repeat customer for sure!
Now the good stuff! They had on the floor the new Aprillia Super Moto 550 SVX, can you say holly sheeeeit! super trick! what a piece of equipment! I was allset to trade the R1100 on the spot, and then i realized i need both, so the new SVX will be coming home soon! they also had a few new Tuono's and 1 super trick 2001 Mille with all the carbon fiber bits , and 1000 miles for an unbelievable $8000 (on consignment) what a hot bike! I remember when Aprillia's were the joke of the European motoX circuit (1980's) because of their low tech, and equally crappy reliability, boy have they gotten their **** together! A fun day!

I changed my last set using tire irons and rim protectors. And my Marc Parnes balancer.

I have a Harbor Freight motorcycle tire changer but I didn't want to use it. So I opted for the irons.

The rear can be tough to get off. Formula 409 to lube it, I also let it sit in front of my space heater till it got warm and pliable. The front is so easy it's like butter. They both go on very easy. Just make sure they are well lubed while filling so they seat correctly.

Normal euro bracket.

Has to be within a certain distance of the rear axle, both above and behind.
That's the nature of the spec. Just can't recall the number,
Plus, they know it's going to come right off, so they at least make it easy.

> i got the feeling that the tubeless tires were a different animal

They are; no tubes to pinch. Thus, actually easier, in my book.
If you did the old moto-x rims with tubes, these should be no problem (though once in a while, one will really fight you)

So how do you like your Avons Shredder? I still need to get mine mounted. I would try it myself but I have no irons so I'll prob bring my wheels to Brooklyn with me one day when I drive to work and have 1 of the 2 shops near my job do them up.

I went to Cross Country BMW this aft for their open house, but it was a dud due to the weather.....more importantly I dropped off my "get serious" Motorrad sweepstakes entry form in hopes I can win a bike....yeah right!!

The Avons are awesome! very pleased with their performance. Steve, that is the bike! Looks like it could leap tall buildings with a single bound! My brother had mentioned that they have been suffering reliability issues, not sure what is up with that, i will do some searching. Next tire swap I will give it a try myself.

Theres your problem.......you went to a HD dealer. Not that they do bad work, but in my limited expirence they charge a premium and them some. This is evident by some of the HD riders that bring us their tire work at our regular rate for 1/2 price of the HD dealer!

LOL... my HD dealer wanted to charge me $265!!! to change the rear tire, the one time I brought the bike in to them within the warranty period!... I told them to get real...

Seems to be that most of the people riding HD's these days are rather inept when it comes to wrenching... or they don't mind paying the premium... after all, they are riding the true spirit of "American Freedom" at least by the standards of 100 years ago... and why not support this "freedom" by continuing to get ripped off long after the initial sale ripp-off?

Foo -- you no like the EZ changes your tire with the NoMar idea?

I also Plasti-Dipped my HFTC clamps ... we'll see how that works during the week when I do the CM400T tires.

Shred -- did you say that Joe is the Service Manager now or was that just speculation? Just curious ... oh forget it, thought you went back to CCBMW.

Drove today and brought my rims and Avons with me. Brought 'em over to Tri Borough Motorcycle (McGuinness Blvd Brooklyn) to be put on. Dude did them while I waited m&b for $25 a piece. Sorry--I couldn't wait...I was actually prob a few miles from seeing belt on my front left side.
