new 2004 1100s
I see this as my only way into an affordable BMW.
So what do you fellas think, are these bikes worth the 9900, 7.5% tax, and approx $600 it will cost to have shipped to my house. I then have to add bar backs, peg lowers, racks and bags to get going. Used - these bikes don't seem to retain any value. So should I look for a decked out used bike - or go new with the full warranty. Also, are these S bikes in the same insurance league as the Yam, Honda, Hyabusa class fo a 46 yo male NJ?. Anyone know what the original MSRP was for these with Heated grips, socket, abs? Thx Last edited by concoude98; 11-16-2006 at 12:18 PM.. |

Well worth the money. My '02 had an MSRP of $15,690, then the '04s came out almost exactly $2,000 less. BMW had a killer finance program on them with 0.9% and 5 free payments on the 4 & 5 year loans. That's a lot of bike for the money, used '04s with low miles going for about $9K. I'd ride it awhile before changing the ergos; you may not need to as these models already have the comfort bars (above the triple clamp). Bags are about $800 new, but you can find a nice set used for about half that. Insurance should much friendlier than sport bikes. I'm on the high side at $600/yr compared to what I've seen others pay.

Should you go for a loaded used bike, depends on if you can find a loaded one and what it comes with.
I would choose a low milage used bike with all the farkles over a brand new one without anything. Just looking in the classified section of this board shows a stock 2004, 2500 miles, for 8k, and a 2004 with lots of stuff for 8400. The money you save in taxes will cover shipping, or cost of plane ticket to fly out and ride home (my suggestion).

Rider Insurance does not consider the R1100S a sportbike. Its lumped in with the standards and cruisers so your insurance will be a third to a quarter what the sportbikes(CBR, R1, GXSR, ect.) pay. |

The guy that bought my '01 which was fully LOADED - ohlins, chip pipe, induct, lights, the WORKS now wants to sell it. If I had a bigger bank account and more fogiving wife, I'd buy it back. He STOLE it from me for $9K when I was desp. to sell. It's now got 26,000 miles on it. I'm sure you could get it from him for bet. 6 & 7K. Ping me if you want me to put you in touch with him. He's in NJ and called me this week looking to see if I wanted to buy it. (which I do, but can't.)

Lots of good used deals out there in the $8K range with bags.
Like SC said, there's a set of bags for sale on BMWMOA right now about 1/2 price. You'd need the hangars, about $200 for new. All that said, the ergos adapting willl become evident per your miles and your body shape. Insurance on my S full coverage in L.A. County is about $350 a year with multi bike, good rider, yadda yadda...

There's a different mindset involved. I saw an insurance industry stat, most sportbikes only see about 20k miles in their lives. The S is barely considered broken in by that point. The price doesn't seem that bad when you consider it will last you decades. If you're the type who wants a new bike every other year, then it's probably not worth it.

I paid $4700 for a 99 w/75k miles 2 years ago and haven't looked back. New for under $10k? GRAB IT if you have the $$. I'm 55 with a clean record, paying $195/yr insurance (American Family) in podunk Iowa.
And it's a sleeper bike: it will run the legs off most sports bikes, particularly if there is the slightest suggestion of a bend in the road, and the H-D crowd... well, we try not to talk about the handicapped when they can't defend themselves. ![]()

Actually, I just checked, it's $203yr. have an 05 SV650 too. Total prem $361yr. We get a winter discount for non use so that probably plays into it. Homeowner disc etc. I picked it up thiough a local broker. The home office # for Dairyland is 715 346 7996. For comparo, they were charging me $575 for a Daytona 675.

I've always seen the best rates with Dairyland, but the milk of their kindness wasn't available in CA last I checked. I'd get on their tit if I was in a state where they write policies.

I am in Central PA and used to go through progressive. When I addded my two new bike they wanted almost $3k. I switched to State Farm and get this...they only charge by displacement. The R1100S is more than my Ducati S4rs!. I have the '04R11S, a 2007 S4Rs, and a 2006 Ducati Sport 1000 and I pay $417/year total. That's full liability, $250 coll and $250 comp

Steve, I have Foremost in CA... have all my bikes on the policy and the total is $461 on the year... not full coverage on all of them, mind you. But for the cruiser, the "sport tourer" and two sportbikes, that's not to bad I'd like to think.
