R12S Track day prep.
Hi,
Has anyone worked out how to remove: 1. The indicator / mirror pods 2. The Passenger foor pegs 3. The registration plate assembly. Haven't found anything in the manual (didn't look to hard). I'll have a go, but I was hoping for a head start.... Adrian |

I thought 1 & 2 were designed to come off very easily. Dunno about 3.

Hi,
3. Registration Plate assmebly: Five of those funny torque head screws then unlog the electircal connector. The electrical connector looks a bit fragile the clips that hold it togethor look like they might brake (very thin plastic) ![]() |

Hi,
1. Indicator / Mirrors. Well, I unscrewed the two big screws, and the it looks like this: ![]() So ynless the little bit with the sixteen (16) on it is some sort of "plug" for the cable, I don't think it will be easy. Also the two screws hold some of the internal plastic strcture to the outer fairing. The big hole it leaves will bugger my coefficient of drag, best tpe them up as well. Adrian |

2. Pillion Pegs.
This I'm realy not sure about, the seems to be 3 screws a piece, the first two look innocent enough. It's the third screw hidden by the fairing that locks its to the upper subframe. Looks like it might be acting as a brace between the lower and upper rear subframe struts ![]() Anyone try this yet? Adrian |

On that last one, looks like you should replace the bolt after removing the pegs. You can see the effects of weight reduction in all these pictures - the construction might be a little less sturdy overall than the R11S as a result.

It's probably fine in the short run, but I would not leave off permanently.

I'm really interested in the peg part of this. I took mine off the first night I had the bike. Anyone else seem to think this is a problem? I, too thought it looked like a brace. Wouldn't want to cause a problem by leaving them off.

I'm interested in the rear pegs as well. I had my dealer take them off while the prepped the bike as I was taking delivery. It took them about 10 minutes so it can't be that involved. Also they made no mention of them being part of the frame stiffener issues? If no one has any scoop I'll ask my dealer next week - I'm taking her in for the 600mi service.

You can remove the turn signals, rear tag/turn assembly and headlight in no time flate. It's beautiful how fast it can all come off and go back together.

To remove the pegs you have to really remove the rear side panels to get at the top bolt. The rear mounting point is a sliding rubber grommet attachment thingy which is either a) really easy to slide off b) takes forever.....
I'm not so sure they are a structural part of the rear end , tho they are rather over engineered . Stu |

Hi Atlanta,
How do you get the cable out of the mirror stalks? I've notivced orginal 916 owners at trackdays using a zip tie to keep their fairing together after removing the mirrors, Do you need to do anything with the gap? Adrian |

Hi,
My dealership confirmed the bit about the mirror stalks, they also suggested that I have a part made to allow the bolts to be put back in place thus holding the fairing togethor, so not as simple as I hoped. The passenger footpegs, they reckon, can come off without affecting the stress loadings on the rear subframe. I think I'll wait for a while before doing this. The registration plate assembly can come off, and is disconneted by that little switch. After which when you switch on the ignition, you get loads of light bulb failure warnings, but these will go away after you reconnect without having to go to the dealer to get them reset. Regards, Adrian |

Oh, gotcha. Boy, I can't imagine BMW making that kind of error. N8's and the San Jose BMW R12Ss are going to look funny on the track with footpegs - that will REALLY piss of the competition.
