chicken strip: is it a common sense indicator?

When I got mine R12S with 190 rear I thought I would get chicken strips as wide as the tire itself!
actually the front seems like the place for the real strips.

Keep in mind that different tires have different profiles and one guy with significant CS's may be pushing harder than the guy who doesn't. And there are some bikes/tires where you'll be running off the tires on one end and have big strips on the other. It's not the end all in lean angle measurement

You can think of them as bravery indicators or prudency indicators. Both viewpoints are valid.

I have seen people with slight strips going faster than me, and I have seen people with none and dragging hard parts that went slower than me. All with the same bike and the same or similar tires. So to me it is more of an indication of style than it is of speed.

Personally I go for the even wear, tires are too expensive to leave all that tread on the edges.

Billy, doubly IRONic than your display your chicken strips in front of mangled guardrail.

Yes...Tire Profile makes a very big difference.

I remember having Michelin T66X on my R100GS/PD and using them up to the edge and even had two near-highside episodes. I then started using the Metzeler Tourance after a buddy tipped me to how much better they are. I was always faster and more confident on the Metzelers and always had 3cm of unused tread at the edge.

Here is the not so good Michelin T66X...note there's no CS.

And here's the much better performing Metzeler Tourance...note the 3cm CS:

wswartzwel ... how much mileage do you get out of the BT 014? Just curious as I recently changed to them!

Thanks

Nick

Bike set up and tires change everything. I used to run on MZ6s with a stock set up. I fried the tires, and scraped the hell out of the center stand and pegs.
Now I'm running on M1 sportecs, with a kurz paralever arm, and ohlins. I have a centimeter of chicken strip. I swear I'm riding just as hard.

About 3K give or take 500 miles... Depends on temperature, and road surfaces, and tire pressure. Some of our roads are chip seal and although the gravel bites good for traction, it chews the tires up. I love the way they feel, and they give me confidence that many other brands don't.. but that is subjective...... I get 8k out of the Pirelli Diablo Stradas, which are not as confidence inspiring if you push them hard, which helps keep my street pace a little more prudent.

Thanks. I too prefer the Bridgestones ... had them on all my regualr street bikes and they perform well. HK is very wet in the summer and they are fantastic in the wet! Didn;t expect too much life out of them, though!

As for the latest osting of 'bike porn'* ... mmmmmmm ... nice

Bet they weren't cheap!

wswartzwel~
i'm with you. i love those tires and have been running them on my BCR almost constantly. i get about the same mileage...3k or a tad more. they're nice and sticky for a street tire, don't surprise you too often and for the most part are predictable.

as far as using all the tread on the tire, yes that's required:

hey jeff~ who painted those black rims for you? man, it must have taken hours for the guy to paint all those little white dots on them!

After you lay down the base coat of black, you just add the white by spraying it through a window screen.
