Morning all
I have been lurking on the board as i considered the various options for my first sport bike. Yesterday i bought a 2000 R1100S in black - the fastest color Currently ride a Harley but have been yearning to get something that actually handles and stops. The repli racers do not suit 'cos I am ancient (51) ![]() Test drove the S yesterday and bought it on the spot - to me this bike is FAST. Grew up in the UK and always liked BMW bikes. Rode brit bikes and honda's in UK. When I got to the USA bought a Harley. Not even confident on this BMW it is FAST. Will have to take my time. Even a bit scared to lean at this point - feels high in the air Did I mention it is FAST All will be well and you will see me purring round SoCal on this bike (It's FAST) Hope to bump into some of you over time (FAST) Gary Parky |

Since you mention you're getting use to lean angles, etc. on the (faster) BMW, may I recommend a reread of a book like Twist of the Wrist (Vol. I) by Keith Code. The things they cover are perhaps not so critical on the Harley since you're generally going slower through the corners. The book will "remind" you (probably things you already know) about braking, throttle, body position, etc. for the faster speeds. Be safe during the transition.....

hey gary,
welcome to the fold. you're in for a good time. did you buy the bike from irv seaver's? i was there yesterday picking up parts and saw someone buzzing around on a very clean black S. to add to john's recommendation, "sport riding techniques" by nick ienatsch is another good read. does a good job on all the fundamentals, and it'll help you become a smoother, safer rider. |

That was me at Irv Seaver By the way John you are very polite but I may be learning some of this for the first time. Appreciate the suggestions on the book I will also be peppering you all with dumb questions. This is my first performance bike Did I mention that it is fast Gary |

Did you see that road sign? You've just entered the Twilight Zone.
My first road registered road bike was a 2nd hand 1973 H*nda XL250. I jumped off of that onto my first new bike, a 1979 H-D Sportster which I ended up wrapping around a fire plug. After two weeks of operations and intensive care followed by three months learning to walk again, it took a few years to 'get back onto the horse what throwed me". My first test ride was a H*nda V45; it was shocking how it fell into the corners, really unnerving. I ended up building up a basket 1950 Panhead - should have kept that one. But I digress... Anyway, after 21 years, going fast has lost it's lustre and going around corners quickly has become the way I shed the daily stress. Enjoy the new toy. BTW, silver with yellow stripes beats black! ![]()

Bar backs are for 51 year olds. Which is why I bought some.

...Gary... do some track days... the safest way to play around and learn about your new toy in a controlled environment!
The "S" behaves very well at the track (if you don't f'up your rims in the very first session, that is!) and is a fun (very fun) bike overall... you'll be a happy camper... What the sport bike will do for you is that you'll end up riding the Harley like you do the sport bike... I frequently (very frequently) have to replace metal parts on mine now... never happened before I started riding spirt bikes again... tztztz
