My dad trying to talk my brother into the ocean. Rob still has that same look on his face today.

LOL, I actually remember that trip, and not wanting to go in the water.

My mother has been gathering and copying old family photographs for years and it is surprising how many she was able to collect of my father's family. He was one of 12 children. When his time came, we knew his cancer was terminal and he only had a few months, and because he was a returned soldier and had a Gold Card, (lots of great benefits) mum was able to have him hospitalised at home with 24 hr nursing care at no cost. He had an electric remote control bed that we positioned in the lounge room so he could look out the window, control the tv, airconditioner etc. But the thing he got the most pleasure from was watching all the old photos over and over and reliving his past. I bought a big screen iMac with remote and fixed it to a swivel/extending monitor thingamajig mounted to the bed. He could reach it and surf the net, watch the photos and play his favourite music whenever he wanted.

I took 3 months off work and sat with him every day except for a couple and it was an amazing time and a great privilege, and something I will cherish for the rest of my life. I hope when my time comes I can face it with the dignity and calm assurance he did.

Seems to me that you (Bill and Rob) have had some great times with your dad as well over the years.

Something I am sure he was glad to have when he left too.

Reading this, I find myself pondering the question "whether I would have wanted some time to prepare and say goodbye, over the sudden way my dad departed"...

I did have great times with my dad... and good conversations on a very frequent basis. But I dearly miss him... and I am not sure it would have been any better or easier had I been given a chance to prepare.

Good for you, Kevin... I am glad you had that chance and that you cherished it.

Kevin, Thanks for the encouragement. You were very fortunate that you were able to take a leave of absence from your work. My mom passed suddenly and unexpected of a brain aneurism. Dad on the other hand is slowly getting weaker as his body is worn out. Thankfully he is still sharp as ever mentally so we still have good visits. I am having to juggle work and helping take care of him. It is not easy. you have to deal with the emotions of seeing your childhood hero helpless and in a lot of pain. There is also the wrestling match with your own selfishness that would rather be out having fun than being a nurse. On the positive side, when all you can do is be with them lots of true feelings and conversation happens. My father told me he was very very glad I was his son. Something I had never heard from him before.

Ralf, although there are good things about being able to say goodbye... My dad continually wishes he could have passed away like my mom, without suffering.

Live each day as if you may never see your loved ones again. Say the I love you phrase... but also live it through your actions.

Pictures are nice memories.

I would rather have these memories "young and healthy"

BTW I told my wife I hated those baggy pants...

Than the pictures that show old and sick and miserable. While both have value, the healthy ones are much easier to look at.

Interesting photo Bill, you have your son's body in that shot and now you look more like your dad. Is that shiny face little Rob in the middle?

Enjoy your time together, my dad passed away 25 years ago on Dec. 25. He just wanted to see one more Christmas.

Went to visit our daughter and her new husband for Christmas dinner last Monday... went snooping in the basement of their rental house and saw this.

So I wandered outside to look in some other buildings the land lord has scattered on the property, Three houses on a huge corner lot in Fayetteville... Lots of mustangs, and english cars.. bug eye sprites, Triumph TR6, This Cobra was in a shed.

and this little gem was under a tarp outside.

There was another house up on the hill.. He told me it had some british motorcycles in the basement... I saw a couple of newer Triumph Sprint ST's that were crashed that he was in the process of rebuilding.

So, do you have a plan to talk to the landlord, or is it just interesting stuff...
