Power Commander Issue

I installed my PCIII several days ago.

I started the bike, and it fired up immediately and ran flawlessly. I then ran the bike for approx. 5 minutes to warm it up, then shut it down and put it back in the garage.

I wheeled the bike out today, clad in leathers ready for a PCIII enhanced early spring throttle flogging experience.

Much to my dismay the bike would not start. I had just disconnected from my battery tender, so no battery issues. Starter turned the motor over perfectly, but no ignition. I don't think any spark was getting to the plugs.

I checked all the connections, all were fine.

Very flabbergasted, I wheeled the bike back into the garage, stripped my leathers, and pulled the fairing. I disconnected all PCIII connectors and re-connected the stock connectors.

I then flipped on the key, hit the starter, and the bike immediatly fired up and ran fine.

Has anyone had this issue? And if so, how do I fix it.

It was a beautiful day too...............erg!!!!!!!!

Cool

You need a power source for the 9v hook up on the unit. JonyR has figured out that if a 9v or 12v source is connected to the reserve plug then all is good with the 'god like power' of the endless monkey box.

Capn' N,

Power commander claims that the device gets its power from the connections in the wiring harness. Is this bunk? How come it worked the first time?

Do a search for PCIII cold starting issue. Lots of info.

Dude, definitely do a search. You will find all kinds of issues. Some are happy with the work arounds. Others are not. I pulled mine off and sent it back.

Cool

It does get power from the regular harness but it's in sleeping mode. So when you hit the starter the unit has to 'wake up' from the injector signal. It makes for a hard start. The guy's have figured out that if a switched power source (a.k.a. key switch) sends juice to the unit and wakes it up before you start turning the motor over. The lastest update was that Dynojet was offering an patch cable for 'plug & pray' feature.

I had exactly the same problem with my 2000 S which I installed the PC III into last summer. Counn't get the frigin' thing started and nearly toasted the battery trying last week- I read this post this morning, attache a 9v to the PC III and it fired right up.

Anyone know if I can leave the 9v attached or if I should unplug inbetween rides?

Other than that I think the PC III made a great improvement, also added the SJ air filter and induct at the same time. No more surging, great accel etc...

I read the exorbitantly long post on the cold start issue and went out, cracked the throttle, let the engine crank over 9 times and: "Its alive!"

Went out and took a short ride (150 miles). It was a beautiful spring day in the Eastern Sierra. The bike now red lines with no hesitation. She climbed from 80 to 140 (by the GPS) like never before. Gone is the annoying mid RPM flat spot supplied by the stock moronic unit.

I also installed the SJ BMW exhaust chingases at the same time. I didn't notice any difference. This is disappointing due to the fact that much swearing, tool throwing, and beer swilling had to accompany the installation. (It was a total pain in the anus).

Curt at Dyno Jet returned my email regarding the starting issue, and is going to supply me with a connector so I can hard wire the monkey box.

Thanks for your comments. Aside from the starting issue the Pandora's box seems to be the best improvement yet.

Matty
