New Air Filter

I found a K&N filter that will fit the stock air filter base, it's E3230. The only thing wrong with it is it is too tall (4.3"). There have others that are 3.5" and 3.25". I haven't fit it to the bike yet but I know for sure it's too tall. I'll be ordering the correct one once I determine for sure which will work best. Here are some pics. I still need to get some long screws to secure the lid to the base, ala SJBMW's. Also will have the lid made of aluminum. The Plexiglas was laying around and it's easy to work with as a prototype.

Question

Obviously this must not be the housing for r1100s, at least for a 2000 model. I'm just going through my first do-it-yourself maintenance run and I just order an after market K&N filter from A&S and I'm assume it's plug and play.

Since you say they don't have a stock filter specifically for your bike, I'm going to guess it's a new 1200?

there IS a stock filter tor eplace the BMW OEM piece.
only problem is, it don' pass as much air as the OEM piece.
Most everyone buys a SJ powerfilter which has much more surface area and it looks like PMC is emulating that design; he's a good wrench.
Now for an uberschnorkel:<)

The stock K&n is much smaller and drops right in place of the stock filter.

What he is trying to do is make a home made version of the San Jose bmw power filter.

Which brings me to question of my own for pmc487, why not just buy a power filter from SJBMW and be done with it right

I have the SJBMW power filter and Induct, which work great. I just like playing with different ideas.

Length Width Height Sq inch Sq inch
of opening of opening opening Filter Area

BMW Stock 4.25 3 0 12.75 12.75

SJBMW 4 2.75 4.5 8.64 60.05

Philip's Setup 5.125 3.75 4.38 15.9 80.71
3.5 64.75
3.25 59.95

My setup will have at least as much filter area ( 59.95sq in with 3.25H) as the SJ filter but it has 84% bigger opening for the air to enter the box. Also, by moving the filter to the outside of the air box you increase the air box's capacity. Now all I need to do is figure out how to make an uberschnorkel for this setup.

FYI....
The back of the K&N automotive air filter catalog has listings for air filters that you can order by shape and size.

Or you can look for what you need here:

x2.... the surface area of a pleated filter is the total suface area of the paper stretched out, minus some inefficiency from folding it.

but then again, you cant really use just surface area to judge when you are tallking paper v foam v gauze/screen like a k&n.

I dont want to get in the whole stock vs. K&N vs. whatever debate here but the stock filter has a lot of filtering area if you go by surface area of the paper, more than the K&N stock replacement I would venture by quite a bit. so othr than the fact that paper doesn't handle water very well, is there a significant gain to be made by changing the filter? where is the data with "no" filter present, and where is the wind tunnel data that shows pressure (positive or negative) in the airbox as a function of the more open induct. from my gluteous maximus dyno the single biggest performance improvement I got after installing the Laser cat elim and cans was pulling the O2 sensor, boy did that make it come to life!
