OT - A modern Parable!

A Japanese company ( Toyota ) and an American company (Ford) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River . Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners, and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, e xtra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India

Sad, but oh so true! Here's something else to think about: Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US , claiming they can't make money paying American wages. Toyota has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US .

The last quarter's results:

Toyota makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses. Ford folks are still scratching their heads.

IF THIS WASN'T SO SAD IT MIGHT BE FUNNY!

The numbers in the parable do not seem to reconcile to the available financial information on the respective company web sites. But, it's only internet mumbo jumbo.

Everyone knows the margin of victory in canoe racing is measured by seconds/minutes... not miles.

another internet hoax

My brother, who subcontracts engineering to Chrysler, tells how the Germans couldn't figure out how to get Chrysler running properly, and now we see that Chrysler has been sold. He said the biggest problem is the guy above "Dr. Z" was a eurocentric-moron; incapable of understanding the marketing situation in North America.

He also says the "real" problem is Chrysler can't stop building gas guzzlers. They don't know how to make a marketable car that has good gas mileage. Now with the announced rulings for higher gas mileage I presume Chrysler is cruising in the DoDo lane.

There are books about the "Toyota Way" but even after reading those books most companies, whether thay make cars or something else, cannot comprehend the content. US Business schools turn out some of the best trained (meaning mindless) lemmings on the planet.

Chrysler was sold for a pittance of what Daimler invested in them. Don't hold me to the figures, but it was about $8 billion USD, after investing almost $30 billion in the tenure they owned them. The reason for the fire sale was speculated as being the huge overhead weight of the Chrysler pension plan. Thank god the UAW ensured the short term needs of it's workers (and own corrupt governance!), while failing to see the forest for the trees.

As far as business schools churning out mindless lemmings, that may have been the case in the past, but I can assure you that all of the top end business schools look at the collapse of these dynastic US corporations and try to figure out why, and what to do differently the next time a similar situation arises.

Do you happen to know if any Business Schools have started teaching ANYTHING about quality assurance programs? ISO9000, QS9000, that sort of thing? Last time I looked they couldn't even spell quality assurance.

Hedonistic compensation levels for top Execs and Quality do not mix IMO.

As far as that goes it is one of my main reasons for flat tax. The more you make the more you keep. But everything needs to be taxed. Welfare, everything. No black holes to drop things into: no freebies to art museums, no third and fourth home in the Rockies, no big boat, nuttin'.

But on the issue of Quality control & assurance: nearly all managers believe that quality is a physical thing, like boron or iron or the color blue. They act like you can pour a gallon or litre of quality into a product and out it comes better.

Quality is an agreement (spoken or not) between buyer and seller. There is no "Quality Atom" or "Quality Wavelength" though most "bosses" act like there is. I think most of them were trained by Duck Dogers in the 24th and Half Century.

Here's something to think about. After Ford bought Jaguar, they invested an addtional five billion dollars and have yet to see a profit. Sell the dog!

'07 SuperCrew 4x4 FX4 6.5' bed. Only comes with the 5.4L engine, which is a little pokey.
