Virginia Introduces $3550 Speeding Ticket

From the Wow/Yikes! Department -

California drops a notch on the 'nutt-o' meter:

http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/18/1818.asp

And at least they ( seem ) to be honest about it... :/

To paraphrase a quote from another thread - "... and, .. Let's be careful out there..."

Why? Because of this?

Is this not a blatant conflict of interest by this joker Albo? How can he legally spearhead legislation that would so obviously increase business to his law firm?

"The tax applies only to Virginia residents, so that out-of-state motorists only need to pay the regular ticket amount."
not that i was considering a move, but it's now most definitely off my list of "want to live there" states.

Having been born, raised and schooled in Virginia, I can say that it has always been a bit of a police state. Looks like it just got worse.

All the eastern seaboard states from Maine to South Carolina have turned into little European-socialist experiments IMHO. South Carolina... well, they've always got Charleston to anchor them in lunacy. Georgia: gave us Jimmy Carter, need I say more? Florida: where all the old nut cases from up north go to turn into dried leather and blow away.

Yeah, I can't see much of any reason to live on the Atlantic.

Don't EVEN get me stated about the Midwest...

Virginia Introduces $3550 Speeding Ticket
Virginia legislator introduces new speeding ticket tax that boosts penalties beyond $3550, driving business to his traffic law firm

this is as dishonest as it gets to usethe law to earn income for a firm

That does not even take into account the increase in insurance for the next three years.

All this is gonna do make sportbike riders think about eluding.

Cop " Why did you run from me"

Sportbike rider " I don't have enough money to pay the fine"

Reading the bill, the compounded offenses required for anybody to be assessed "$3550" makes for a pretty extreme example case. Whoever fits that profile: Cry me a river. You were either repeatedly dumb and reckless or impossibly unlucky. Over 80mph has always been reckless driving in VA and you just have to take your chances when and where to do it. I agree it's unfair that the out-of-stater in the SUV in front of you doing over 80 won't have to pay as much as residents will, and that may be challenged in court. Personally, I don't speed much in excess of the traffic flow, or do improper lane changes while yakking on a phone, or any other moving violations -- though I see others doing it with impunity.

The bill's DUI fines actually seem way too LOW to me. But apart from fat fines, first offense DUI should require a mandatory 10 days in the slammer and license suspension for 6 months. Second offense mandatory 60 days in the slammer and 2-year suspension, no "suspended" sentences or probation. Third offense string them up by their thumbs.

I'm glad VA's cracking down on I95 lately. It's a madhouse out there. And the semis doing 90 on I81 are a menace.

...funny, it's much like NH's "Live free or die"... sure, you don't have any sales tax... that is all nice and great until you own a home there.... Property tax will make up for the lack of sales tax nicely...

I always love how people are trying to convince themselves to ignore reality...

wow, this thing has consumed my brain for a bit today...being a virginia resident. thing is, this bill is aimed at funding road projects NOT public safety. isn't that what moving violations are all about? we get taxed enough from sales tax, real estate tax, and personal property tax (which pains me to even think about as it basically taxes you for owning anything). aside from our gun laws, my own state is creeping towards the list of places not to live.
