Elephantiasis cylinder head cover

One of my cylinder head covers started to grow seriously funky warts.

You know what a healthy one looks like:

Now, check this one out:

So, vanity and a fear of blobby stuff forced me to do this:

Was oil seeping through the aluminum? If not, what was causing the paint to lift like that.

Gonna have to do the black valve covers mod myself one of these days... they sure look good.

Swart: The blobs seemed to begin to grow all at once after many happy miles which led me to believe there was some strange chemical reaction with a new oil formulation - Rotella Full Synthetic. However, the cylinder fins are still perfect. I believe I just got some crappily coated cover from the factory and it took sometime to manifest.

Bob: I had to have the old stuff sandblasted off so I had them powder coated at the same time. $100. for the whole job.

Skippy: That tends to happen when you pull the valve covers, oil leaks out on your shoes. I promise I'll fill it back up before I ride it anywhere.

Painted covers

I've been thinking about painting the covers on my S the same red color of the body. I'm not sure though.

For those thinking of painting their cylinder covers, take it from an experienced person: don't bother to remove the OEM coating. It's about 8 straight hours of elbow grease PER CYLINDER, and then the oil plug parts don't seal well.

Just rough up the OEM coating and apply the color of choice over it and bake.

As to puffing up, that looks like a solvent-driven problem, possibly the synthetic oil, but I have my doubts. I'd say the paint was poor to begin with and it took this long for oil to get under the surface and start the expansion.

Paul, good to know you din't ride it out like that;-)

Stephen I wouldn't advise painting them red, I've seen it a couple of times in the flesh and it doesn't look so good(of course imo). I also used to own the ddp S and thought about the same thing but when I actualy saw one I knew enough.
