Mega bike suggestions

Ok. I love the BCR but... I just saw a hugely modified 05 Duc monster with the most imposing sound, full Ohlins f/r, dry clutch, carbon everywhjere, clip ons, brakes & wheels and got me thinking... if a guy was to invest (blow) 10k on another toy - impractical or otherwise, what would be on the cards? The Duc for 10k has 16k miles on it and been on the track.. that scares me a little...

I'll keep an open mind though - but I'm looking for awesome handling & performance on tight roads and something a little unique.

Bring on the suggestions & photos fellow enthusiasts...

Anyone know of any quality project bikes out there and available?

I'd look for: a 955i Speed Triple w/underseat exhaust, a 750 Brutale, or a Tuono. For a little over your budget w/o mods, I'd look at a Hypermotard.

Certainly NOT unique, but get a ride on the new '07 GSX-R1000. I've had mine a couple of months, and it's the finest handling supersport/superbike I've EVER owned or ridden, by a lot. And I've owned many. It certainly won't replace my 12S, which has character, uniqueness, and its own beauty, but the performance of the 1000 is extraordinary.

I really hadn't thought of going the GSXR route. DFoes it really stir the soul riding, or is it a little too precise, fast and sterile?

Well, it's certainly more sterile than a powerful twin, but it's very fast (but that's up to the rider's input), and surgical in handling. Can a bike be too precise? I don't mean nervous or too responsive when I ask that.

I think I'd better ride some of Japans recent toys... Perhaps the 600s would be more suited as I'm not looking to blast highways & would rather ride a bike harder than only use 50% of it's potential.

...the problem with those "precise" bikes is that you always have to go fast to enjoy them... I'd rather ride my donkey and feel like approaching and controlling the bikes limits then the Ducati and feel like approaching MY limits...

But then, that is just how I feel about it... plus, I just don't like inline 4's...

Agreed... I've had a fair share of Jap sports bikes before... Last one being a TL1000R (awesome motor/crap chassis/susp/ergo etc) But then maybe a SB8 Bimota?

I like the idea of a moto, but they're not conmfortable to sit on. I am 42!

A buddy of mine has a KTM Superduke and he really rides it hard. I asked him a while back, 'What bike are you going to get after this?' He said, 'If I get sick of riding this, it is time to give up!'.
Triumph is doing a roadster version of the 675 that appeals to me, and I also fancy an F800. Not like a Japanese 1000 on the straights but great at everything else.

Sort of my sentiments, too - I just got rid of a CBR1000 for the same reason - not quite as extreme as the newest GSXR, but had the same issues - simply way more than you can use anywhere except a track-day, and more than I can use even there. I like to loon about occasionally, and have found I have more fun on a bike I can take nearer it's limits. I wouldn't want one for my only bike, but I just finished building a KTM supermoto street convert that's a 540 close-ratio six speed, ceramic coated piston/combustion chamber & intake/exhaust ports, with lots of compression and 1mm oversize valves, Hotcam, SX carb/pipe/ignition - I'd estimate around 55-57 hp (stock 525's are around 48) in a 250 pound package with shortened travel, sealed spoked tubeless wheels (no carbon or magnesium - they'd hog up too much of the budget), Brembo radial pump and ISR 6-piston caliper on a big floating rotor, etc etc - total investment is less than $8K brand new if you do your own work, around 10 if you have it done. For the open road, I'd be hard pressed to give up my R12S, but for nasty little backroads and dodging Buick bumpers, it's the cat's meow.

I just picked up an MV Brutale 910R the end of March. I got to ride it around the Peaks of the Otter area and up to Cass, WV over the weekend. It is by far the best bike I have ever rode in the mountains. It was comfortable, great handling as the regular bars give you great leverage in the tight stuff and unbelievable brakes. It was certainly not the cheapest bike to buy but one day in the mountains and you will know that you got your money's worth.

Maybe a Daytona 675.
Between the twins and fours in cylinders and power.
A little more euro- and unique, and yet precise and interesting,
and fits your idea of wanting something where you can use more than half the potential. Much less easy to high side than a big 1000
(though I did see one high side just yesterday - ughh)
Great bikes, and a real value, and within your budget.

Honda's new 600RR is supposed to be THE one. Under 420 lbs. WET, and around 105 rwhp.

Now that's true to a degree. But, they're still quite fun at a relaxed pace, and there ARE times when I like knowing that I can go a bit harder and still be confident in knowing that the bike has plenty of chassis and suspension in reserve.

[if you mean the KTM] Er, yes - a narrow one at that. (Granted, it is possible to change seats - there are several aftermarket thicker/softer seats)
