Price of Spline Lube vs Price of Repair

I am about to purchase a 2001 r1100s with about 25xxx miles, and am wondering if I should lube the splines or not. Does anyone know how much a dealership usually charges for this? I don't have a garage or tools to do the job and would be taking it to a BMW dealer. Also, how much would it cost to repair if the splines got shredded?

I'm guessing the dealership could give you a more accurate price than any of us.

Unfortunately my dealer is closed today, and I need to decide sometime soon. I guess I'll just try calling another dealer. Does anyone have a rough idea on the prices?

The bikes 6 years old and already has 25,000 miles without a problem. I'd guess if you were going to have a problem it would have already happened. Of course as soon as you decide NOT to do it, the whole transmission will fall off.....
Seriously, if you are preloading the shifter and aren't having any shifting or false neutral problems your splines are probably okay.
Like an accounting buddy of mines says anytime someone asks him a tax question, "This information is worth as much as you paid for it".

...don't fix what ain't broke...you'd be better off paying close attention to who/hwom pre-owned the bike and how they treated it...

(e.g.) if it was a wheelie/stoppie punk then pay close attention...

The splines on my '01 were in decent shape at the 58k mark. The transmission decided to go at that point (actually the input shaft bearing) and my bike had been thoroughly abused throughout it's infancy & adolescence. Last time I buy an Edelweiss bike!
