R1200STechnical Specs and Maintenance

So I have searched all over, short of buying a shop manual, and I can't find the oil capacities for the R 1200 S Transmission and rear drive. Are they the same as the R1100S? Does anyone know where to find an online service manual (guess I am being cheap)? How about all the tech specs in general? Thanks for the help.

Tranny takes 0.9 liters, and rear drive takes 0.22 liters. You need to buy the maintenance DVD to get the full enchilada. Although I found what I needed for my Paul Smart Ducati at http://www.duc.nu/manuals/
I don't think they have the same for the BMW....could be wrong.

Rob used to have a PDF version of the repair manual on his site. I can't find it now, but if anyone wants the PDF version let me know and I'll email it to you. It's big, over 25 mb.

jduke, was that a PDF for the R12?

If so I'm interested in a look at that.

Now I got two questions. Sure, I would like the pdf file. You may download it to my ftp site as it is so large. But I don't know you email address.

I drained the transmission and got 40oz out of it. That is a lot more than .9 liters.

Hmmmm.

Thanks for the help.

Do it this way...we're talking R1200S....right?

Gearbox, oil capacity
to bottom edge of thread of filler neck
0.9 l

Tighten drain and filler plug to 30Nm.

Yup, a 2007 R1200 S. Goes with my R 1100 S. Sure looks right to me. Gee, you don't think the dealer messed things up or anything. I thought 40oz was a lot of fluid to get out of there. I am surprised a seal didn't blow.

When you fill it please measure, Butch. The DVD I have may be wrong but the fill to the threads is right in line with the R11S so that would be the test. That said....as far as the rear drive on the R12S....do NOT fill to the drain hole, but put in the exact measured amount. This confirmed with the wrench at my dealer. He was very careful to do this when he changed mine at the 600 service.

The Repair Manual for R1100S I have came from Rob and is in a PDF format. I'm uploading it to a FTP site for easy download. If anyone wants it, send me an email.

Thanks Bob,

If I fill to the threads the amount is a little over a qt, 2 oz. If I fill to the threads with the bike on the rear wheel stand, it takes 6 oz more. And, as I said, I got 40oz out of the transmission initially.

So I measured .9 liters ( I love all this metric, english measurement stuff) and poured that in. With the bike level on the ground (on stand) I can see the fluid level a little below the fill hole (around 1/4" or make that about 5mm). Thanks for the help.

Just remember to fill to threads for the tranny, and fill per volume for the rear drive.
