What is a good scooter?

A friend is interested in them. I don't know anything about them except the Honda ones I see.

I have an Aprilia SR50. Great scooter, 50cc 2-stroke, very italian sporty for a 50. In any case, the basic decision is 2-stroke or 4-stroke. 4-strokes are generally more common nowadays but don't make as much peak power often times as their 2-strokes equivalents. In any case, the italian stuff is cool but generally parts are an issue and can cost more.

Personally, I'd say the best bang for the buck is a slightly used Yamaha Vino 125 (requires motorcycle license of course). I see them come up for $1500-2000 all the time. But they can't go on the freeway or anything. You'd need a 150 or 200+ for higher speed use.

I was looking for a Kymco Super 9 or a Aprilia SR 50 DiTech, when I ran across a slightly used Vespa ET2 that is now mine:

The nice thing about the small 50cc scoots is that they don't need to be registered or insured in most states. No yearly Excise taxes either!

I'm having fun tweaking mine - I've installed a 70cc kit, jetted the carb, changed the transmission ratio, and put on an after market pipe.

These rigs are not like a R1100s, as just about every modification done to a 50cc scooter add significantly. It wheelies now.

Vespa and Stella seem to have the highest resale value.

The Piaggio LT150 is mechanically identical to the Vespa ET4, but with bigger wheels. It doesn't look as retro as the ET4, but it handles much better and it's a lot cheaper used. You might want to take into consideration what local dealers are available for support.

It would be used in a small town going to and fro, maybe max 45mph.

I've got a $100 '05 Zuma with the rest of the bikes now (it needed a bit of work). Saw 43mph on a GPS. Much of a grade will net 25mph. I'm hoping my wife will take it to work at least once before I sell it. Heck, I'm going to take it to work once. I should be easy to spot, the only one on a scooter with a helmet.

No, it isn't me.
Just a friend asking about them.

I need a 4x4 ATV of some sort to tear up the back country!

The Yamaha Majesty is a rocketship! Super comfy too. It lives up to the advertising of blurring the line between scooter and motorcycle. I've done some tripple digit test rides I like the Morphus too, if you can get used to the looks but its not really a freeway rig. Gets great gas mileage though. Basically though all the Japaneese scooters seem the same. Except for the Suzuki Burgmans. The electric shifter on those is really cool.

Diane and I have a 2003 Vespa ET-4. Very nice little scooter. Electric start and kick start. 150cc 4-stroke single. Will do 55-60 mph with me on it. Can be a little hard to start when it's cold out if you're in a hurry. Does have a carb heater, but it takes a few minutes.

G,day guys. I got my first scooter about three months ago and love it.
Got myself a Piaggio Beverly, big wheels, 250cc fuel injected, tall screen and
disk brakes. I am forever having to slow down and remind myself I'm on the
scoot. This thing has big bike handling. Its also handy having all that space
under the seat.

you can't go wrong with a Honda elite 80, there are a bunch of Chinese brands out there but who knows about service or parts. The Italians are better, but if its just another toy, then get a Honda. Parts are readily available and resale values are stable. Other issues are type of use and geography. What is the level of mechanical expertise? Will there be urban travel, suburban or rural? flat terrain or hills?? cargo? passenger? So if you aren't sure and just want to jump in get an elite 80, easy to learn on, enough power for urban setting, well supported and easy to sell on for whatever reason. Or go to what is arguably to top of the line and get a mp3 http://http://www.piaggiousa.com/pScooters/MP3.cfm
The thing is I see a scooter as a transportation tool or utility, I get as excited over a scooter as over a good set of screwdrivers, but bikes I dream of... so yeah I have a scooter too, the wife can ride it, I ride it when I want to maintain a low profile or when I want to hide among the bicycles to park, or just to go down to the video store. People that are uncomfortable with bikes are very often comfortable with scooters. So good luck
