N8's shortened R12
Nate commented in a recent thread that he had successfully shortened the R12, I guess to improve race handling characteristics. What exactly was done, and what lead you to believe this was necessary?

When we were at Road America Nate mentioned that they changed the A arm (R1200R I think) to shorten the wheel base.

I think that if the parlever strut is lengthened that it will shorten the wheelbase.

When you have a long bike, suched as a Busa, or Kawasaki ZX-14. The bike does not turn nearly as well as the 600's, or 1000cc bikes (since they are so much shorter). I know the ZX-14 or Busa was not made to take turns. But BMW R1200S is made too. But it is too long. By shortening the total length of the bike; you are able to turn faster.
The shorter a bike is, the easier, and faster it is to turn into a corner. Two of BMW's major drawbacks are its length, and the wheelbase. They both effect performance of the motorcycle. Shorten both of them and the bike will perform better. But when you shorten the wheelbase, the bike is less stable. BMW makes the wheel base long for a reason. To keep it more stable.

I don't know how it effects the bike, but I know its true... You would have to ask someone who knows about that stuff.

Some retro fitting! lol The bike just turns way better now. Paralever arm is the stock. The problem is once we pull the tubes up in the lower triple, it does turn in quicker, but you lose head clearance. We have found a happy medium there.
Jack your rear shock to the moon, all the ride height you can get, the bike will turn way better. There is still fine tune dampning involved though. Have a good one! N8! |

I can't think about the R12 turning better just now, because I am already in the honeymoon period. My R12 turns so much better than the R11 that I feel like the bike knows what I want to do before I do it. If it gets better than this, then God help Ducati owners! I felt like I directed the R11 through the turns, on the R12 I just follow it's excellent lead. This is one phenomenal bike!

...it's not just wheelbase, it's trail as well... hence Nates comment on pulling the tubes up in the lower tripple... you shorten the trail that way and it makes the bike a little more nervous but steer in quicker... Ducati had a different solution for a few years, the adjustable steering head... yet, most people left it in the longer wheelbase configuration or went back to it... it's a trade off, longer wheelbase gives you more stability in faster turns and straightaways but the bike gets rebellious in tight and slow turns... and vice versa... I personally like anything from 40 to 120 MPH... so, the donkey is almost ideal for me... the rest is between the ears!
