Schuberth R1 helmet review.
hello,
the R1 is supposedly the quietest helmet on the market and this may be true. i rode a full day w/o earplugs to give this helmet a fair test on sound levels. i'm a music engineer and producer and as i'm getting older and over 20 yrs in a career that relies on my ears for a living, i've been finding that my threshold for noise when i ride has gotten increasingly more sensitive. i've been in the market for a new helmet and found the R1. it's definitely THE quietest helmet i've owned. anything below 70mph is like 40mph in other helmets i've owned. i still wear my earplugs, but with this combo, it's bliss for me. the built in tinted visor that's inside the main face shiield is awesome too. venting and anti-fogging is very good as well. the fit is fairly accurate if you go with your exact measurement and follow their chart. i bought a scorpion exo-700 a few months ago and their med was too small for me. i ordered a med R1 going with their chart and it fits great. it's slightly tight on my cheeks, but not by much. some helmets are more oval or more narrow or egg shaped, etc. this feels like an upside down egg but mostly round and not very narrow...make sense? THIS IS THE LIGHTEST HELMET I'VE EVER WORN...hands down! i've had it for over a month now and and i couldn't be more happy. i got a good deal on ebay germany (not available in the states). this guy's got good prices in general on schuberths and trustworthy. my helmet was about $490 w/shipping. a bit pricey but worth it for me.

Glad the R1 is working for you but the S1 I got several years ago was awful. The fit never was right even after following the ordering instructions and the strap pulled back into my adam's apple. I sold it for less than I paid and was delighted to get back into a Shoei. Maybe the R1 is better.
I would only consider buying another model if I could try it on first as it does have high quality and features offered by no other brand that I'm aware of. Just my 2cents.

Russ, thanks, I have had a S1 for a few years now and have been extremely pleased with it. I would like to try the R1.
Any pics?

I just bought a Caberg Solo with an interior tinted mask as well. It is nowhere near the level of "quiet" I would have liked, so not a good competitor to the Schuberth, but it is comfortable, breaths fairly well, was reasonably priced, not cheap, not expensive and has some cool factor. Got some good crash ratings as well. I am concerned however, that it may not be DOT approved. I know it is Euro 3 (or whatever they call it) and I did, ironically, buy it from a U.S. retailer over ebay. We will see if I get pulled over when I return home from Italy.
Just my two cents. I will have to check out the Schuberth. I read that softer polystyrenes are better the hard ones, like some of Schuberths. Josh

I may have to check out the R1 for my next helmet. I have the S1 now and the only complaint is the weight. Contrary to your observations with the R1, the S1 is the HEAVIEST helmet I've ever worn. Feels like a cinder block on my head! Let us know how the anti-fog lining holds up on the R1. It has peeled on my S1 and is really annoying!

tried one on and it did look like a quality helmet, only problem is it dooes not fit my fat head, only Aarai and Shoei seem to feel right.

I just got one of the new Shoei Multitec modulars at about $350 and am very happy with it. I could never get any of the Schuberths to fit worth a damn, although they seem like well made helmets. The Shoei is no lightweight, but all the modulars are a little heavier in general. Typically, I'm an Arai wearer but this new Shoei seems to have an Arai fit.

I'm in the market for a new S1, but thanks for the report on the R1..might consider it if I can find a low enough price..

I tried on the Shoei Multitec this past weekend. The Large seemed to fit just fine since I could put it on with the chinbar up, whereas I need an XL in a fullface. However, due to the shape of my head (or size of my chin), my chin is essentially 1 cm from the chinbar on the helmet with it closed. That's a little too close for comfort for me. Not sure if an XL would have fit any different, as there was nobody around to show me other sizes at the time.
Schuberths and Arais never seemed to fit my head shape at all, though.

yeah, seems like it's all about your head shape. i guess it's hard to engineer something that will have a universal fit. i've always gotten a sm in the shoei's but a med was too small for me on the scorpion. this R1 is a med size and seems to be just right. usually i'd go to the store and try one one. this was the first time i measured my head and matched it to the schuberth sizing chart.
i kind of took a chance by ordering one w/o trying on first and i gambled right this time. i took the advice of the webBikeWorld.com review of the helmet. there's a video as well. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/schuberth-r1/
