EWS! has left me on the side of the road
r1200s
yesterday, whilst low on fuel i stopped to drop off some dvds at a shop, then i get back on and it wont go - i've got power but the EWS! wont let it happen rang roadside assist bmw and after about an hour of trying every now and then, it worked - i figured maybe it was low on fuel and had crap in the tank?? went and put 98 octane in and rode 200kms, got up the next day - all good, filled it up with 98 again rode 100kms, stopped for a smoke in the middle of NO WHERE and what happened? EWS! nice place to stop though "jees, now i'm stuffed" ... 20 minutes no-one then "wait a passing motorist - hey stop stop i gesture with my hand - she waves at me and keeps on going - i yell out (her window was open) "i'm not bloody waving at you woman - i'm bloody stuck here!!!!!" and yes i did kick the bike...and i punched the back seat, and for some reason i felt like spitting on it too!?? damn you bmw and damn you EWS! finally someone stops and they were kind enough to patch the call through (4kms down the road at the town) to bmw assist - then they came back to me with a bike trailer, took me and bike to the township (they told me they told bmw assist thats where i'd be - how good are they for doing that) i wait 2 hours (and many attempts in between) and havnt seen anyone - but there was a pub! before going in i try it again - what happened? - yeah it started what is going on? i am 350kms (200 miles) from bmw dealership and its an intermittent problem? now if i ride there and it happens on the way, after refuelling???? Man thats terrible! I recomend you have it towed in to the dealership. This kind of thing is exactly what that warranty and roadside assistance is for. Not to mention the points youll score for this happening to you, BMW will make sure to fix you up ASAP.

What you need is a new ring antenna(oh well that's probably it as it happened to quite a lot of GS and R owners to). If they say they can't find anything insist they replace the ring antenna under warrenty. Search the web for ring antenna r1200gs etc. and I'm sure you will find similar stories. Check: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130148
http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=11927 And there must be more similar threads. So it's not an unknown problem what ever they tell you. Good luck.

Yeah, but this kind of thing is TOTALLY unacceptable on a $15,000-$16,000 bike. These kinds of niggles are what's going to ,slowly, but surely, drive BMW riders off BMW bikes, i.e., this problem, drive shafts, trannies, clutches, on various models. I've owned a bunch of BMW's and love them, but they have more niggles than any of the 40+ Japanese bikes I've owned.

EWS should be an option, in my opinion. Its one thing to be stranded by something like a spline issue -- splines are necessary and stuff happens. Irritating, but one that I can live with. However, its BEYOND irritating to be stranded by something that is a discretionary add-on.

Similar systems have been on my cars over here in europe for more then 12 years and never a problem. BMW just has a bad batch of ringantenna's and some people are the victim of that but I don't feel the part is failing at a rate that it is a liability. I prefer bikes/ cars with EWS as bikes/cars over here do get stolen very often and the EWS just makes it that mutch harder.
I do agree though that BMW dealers often don't provide propper servive and road side assistance and this is unacceptable for a premium brand and makes you wonder what the added value of the BMW rondel amounts to nowadays. Ny dealer up to now has been great though with warrenty issues but is very sloppy in contacting me when parts are ordered and delivered(witch always takes way to long and I suspect the dealer is at fault here and not the firm from witch parts are ordered from) to an anoying degree.

If you think the bikes are unreliable check out the late model BMW & Mercedes car forums. Times have changed as Ford now has the most reliable cars, Toyota is down to #5 & the Germans are ranked below the Koreans. I'm going to keep our E34 Bimmers until the wheels fall off. As far as the bikes go neither my Duc or my Aprilia has ever left me stranded on the side of the road.

'E34 Bimmers until the wheels fall off.'
me too, brotha, me too. My '94 530I has 160K on it and after a complete suspension rebuild with bilsteins and H&R springs and some cleverly finagled 17" wheels, it drives and runs literally better than new...and they can shove Idrive and all it's successors and variants right up their teutonic BMW keester.

well the bike went on the back of a truck today bound for melbourne (350kms) they (the roadside assistance mob) have said that it is 50/50 that i will have to actually get myself to melbourne to pick the bike up as because the fault (the latest one) happened at home and not 100kms from home they dont have to get it back to me
so i said "so, i get on a train, with a helmet, boots, gloves, backpack, and my full leathers and go to the city, catch a cab to the dealership and then ride it 350kms back home? ... why should i have to do that?" the lady i was speaking to was very reasonable and understood my plight she will plead my case with bmw here an dhopefully they will deliver it back to my door heres a few picks while we wait - this is where i waited on sunday, when the bike wouldnt go ![]() ![]()

It happened to me. Here's my thread on this site:
EWS! Warning on new R1200S Definitely is electronic immobilizer antennae (ignition ring) and BMW should cover it under the warranty. |
