header crossover question

Is there any benefit to closing off the small hole in a R1100S stock header crossover pipe with ZTek exhaust and chip?

hey Phil;
if you pop out the blockoff washer, it's supposed to move the torque peak up at the expense of bottom end and midrange. Never tried it myself.
Why not, though, you can always spotweld it back in if you don't like the results.

and since I haven't been a broken record lately....NITRO!!!

From www.pricechemical.com, located in good ol' Tejas.

My buddy that runs the Goodrich Ranch says they're getting overrun on a constant basis and that it's time to secede from the union.......

I removed the crossover pipe. The seat of the pants dyno could not tell any difference. If there is any benefit at all it is very small.

I don't get this desire to remove the X-over on the headers. I just got a peek at a very special race bike today and it had a x-over. Am I missing something here.

thanks, guys

Am gonna leave the crossover alone. It was more of an idle question. I've looked at some performance headers, and none have the crossover. Thanks for commenting.

Not my call Jerry. But, it was impressive. You need to start picking up aluminium cans and selling off some of that Coke stock you own. The HP is not-- I repeat-- is not-- a touring bike. I is also not for the rookie with a big wallet unless it comes with a governor option.

I'm no gearhead so I'll let them write the engineering report. As Nate siad on another thread. He's doing a tire test. You know that Nate will run them over to the rims if the patch will hold.

Don't ever pass up a chance to sit and talk with this rider. It would be your loss.

Maybe Nate will step in here if I'm wrong, but on one of his 1100S race bikes, I recall that they took out the crossover, welded up the holes on the header and Nate said it had a bit more top end. I have heard that the plug was BMW factory tuning to get a good balance between torque (low end torque) and high end horsepower (they really loved advertising that high horsepower number on the R1100S, but knew the bike still had to have some BMW style torque). Do a search here and I think you'll come across some previous discussion of the topic.

Last winter I took a 9/16 drill bit and reamed out the crossover plug since I do more riding below 5,000 - 6,000 rpm than I do above that level. And, I do a bit of two-up riding. I was looking for a bit more low end torque. Hey, it was winter and I had nothing else to do. At the same time I also installed a San Jose Air Filter. Afterward, I thought that I felt a bit more mid range grunt with the reamed out plug. Was it the SJ filter? I doubt it as I figure that filter will really add performance only at high speeds. Maybe it was a combo with the SJ filter letting in more air at all speeds.

Anyway, if you're looking for more low end torque, opening up that plug a bit might do it. I'd take it a step at a time (like the tupperware, putting the cross tube back is easier the second and third time you do it.), hogging it out a little bit in the beginning and seeing how you like it. I wonder: if the plug were removed, would the motor have to be retuned? I'm thinking of old BMWs (bikes in general) that had to have jets and needle positions adjusted as intake systems and exhausts where modified. Did Nate have his boys retune the race bike after the crossbar was removed? As I recall, that bike ran a modified Triumph Triple Power Commander that they were always fiddling with.

Why did I use a 9/16 drill bit? It was the biggest one I had that was long enough to reach down there.
