R12S: Chicane Summit Tailbag

I don't plan on doing any touring on my S. But I do like to have a little space for storage. I ordered and am waiting for the BMW tankbag, but in the meantime I picked up a Chicane Summit tailbag.

It's not specifically made for the R12S, but I think it fits it really well. Here are pics of how I mounted it:

I did not use the (ingenious) straps that BMW built into the rear seat, unfortunately.

The tailbag is a well-made piece. It is stiff enough to hold its shape, which I kind of like. The rain fly is permanently attached to the inside of one of the side pockets. It comes with the mounting cord which you cut to length and terminate with connectors. At about $89R, it is hard to beat. I am fairly happy with the way I have it secured, but to have zero risk of scratches to anything, it would probably be a good idea to remove the 2 D rings at the back corners and run the cord through the nylon webs instead. As-is, the D-rings could scratch the tail light assembly at the corners:

All that said, the Summit is too big for my taste. I would like a tailbag about half this size for tooling around the northwest on daytrips. I will keep this one because you never know when your mission will change, and I think it could be used with a large tankbag and you could tour for several days without any issues.

Yeah, that does look a bit big. I assume it isn't adjustable in size like the 11S egg pod/tankbag?

If it's really too big, I could probably be talked in to taking it off your hands...

Make me a deal.

I don't think so. It is what it is. That's one of the drawbacks of the stiffness.

Hi Jon
I have emailed many distributors including the manufacturer without any joy do you have any idea where I can get one. I will need to air freight it and pay by credit card. The super bikes are on in oz at Phillip island early March and i really would like to get one for those its a 3day trip and the bag would be ideal
Thanks

Has anyone tried the following? They also make a tankbag but I don't think it'll work well on the BMW humped backed tanks. I'm debating getting one of these for my R1100S.

I bought mine from Bob's BMW online. His price was a little higher than some other places, but I was buying some tools at the same time so I wanted to save on shipping. I would think they would ship to you in Australia without any problem.

wow, that's a neat-o tailbag, that should look great on either S, especially the R12.

I use the Chicane bag on my 11S, and it's served me well. It looks pretty good on the bike too, me thinks. And its plenty roomy.

I think you will like it. It is very well made. I recently got the OEM BMW tankbag. It too is very well made and a little too large for my taste. I'll post pics once I get it fitted. Right now I need to figure out how many sausages I need and if I can justify getting a 1/4 barrell of Franzisakner.

motoman,

Following the link which will bring up a "Sale" page. Just click anywhere and it takes you to their main page. They have a selection for "Motorcycle" on the left frame of the page. They only offer 1 tail bag. There are 2 tank bags, 1 hard top, 1 soft.

Sierra BMW carries these and I think you can get them thru A&S as well. I've got one and I think it's just right for a day ride.
