yeah I'm not sure that it's not worth $900 (US or CD) for an experimental fix.
The wear pattern on my input shaft looked just like this one: http://www.sunshinecoast.ca/bmw/InputShaft.pdf It intuitively supports the theory that that the disk rocking on the shaft end cause the wear. The mechanic I used for S shaft replacement was with BMW for ~15 years, now has his own shop. He said that BMW has tweaked with metal hardness and designs for the clutch disk. He said it was very likely the new clutch disk is different than the original design. My question is: when is the disk in the position when it's riding on only partial splines? All the time? Only in neutral? Only in gear? -Bill |
For $900 I'd expect titanium nitride or chromium nitride anti-wear coating on the splines. You can send out an OEM shaft and have it coated for 1/3 that cost.
