R1200S Rumor?
I'm thinking of getting a slightly used R1200S. Has anyone heard what is coming in '09 or '10? If there are significant improvements coming, I'll hang on to my '04 1100S a little longer and get the "latest" when it comes out. Thanks.

There's a major engine increase coming end 2010 which will crank up hp to 132 and torque to 122 max. Also the bike will be lighter by another 8 kilos and fuel economy will improve by 16%. And there will be 4 new thrilling color schemes to choose from. The fairing will be esthetically improved and the huge rear end will be slimmer. Better wait!

To paraphrase a Wild Will post; a senior BMW type at the Daytona 200 told him that the HP2 Sport engine was a bit too expensive to end up with the masses in its present form. As pretty as the HP2 Sport is, I would love to have that engine in the R1200S setup. But it does not appear to be in the works for the near future.

I second Rob's post except I heard there will be five colors. Including my favorite mandarin/silver...

Judging from Deans HP2 porn posts, the HP2 engine has some very nice finishing touches that don't come cheap. It would be interesting if BMW made it an option (high dollar).

I might go for the engine as an option (depends on the price, of course). Just not too crazy about the CF bling. A drop in the parking lot would be very, very expensive.

Bah, CF bling is overrated. When I trashed my kawi i had it covered in CF because it was cheaper then factory plastic. After a year of riding it in sun and rain that carbon looked pretty washed out (it doesn't tolerate UV rays very well). It still saves weight though.

There are very few real reasons for being OCD on CF for a bike that is not raced professionally IMHO. I agree that CF requires much more attention to keep that just out-of-the-box look over time on my Ducati; howerver, I've seen it refinished with clear coat to renew it's showroom lustre. My front fender on the S seems to be a little more robust than the older Ducati CF and is holding up rather well. CF is the primary reason, as best I can find out from my dealer and other factory reps for the HP2 Sport, for the delivery delays.

Judging by all the new castings on the HP 2 engine, it seems logical to me that some varient of this new engine will filter thru the line. There are no interchangeable parts, and the HP 2 engine is so much quiter mechanically.
I can not imagine that BMW will amortize the cost of the HP 2 engine over a relatively small handfull of bikes. A careful reading between the lines should give you plenty of clues.

I would just settle for the rearsets, brakes and wheels on my "regular" R12s.

I think it depends on the protective coating. Because the new M6 bmw has CF roof. That would be a mess.

CF handles UV and everything else fine, just as fiberglass does. What it depends on is which epoxy thee use (must choose, lightest, most flexible, strongest, most UV resistant etc). If most painted plastic and fiberglass used the same lightweight-biased epoxy, or a lack of top coating that most CF does, it too would look like ass. A think clearcoat on top of even aged CF looks like brand new. Not a bad idea for street CF.

p.s. properly utilized CF is covered by sponsor stickers anyway, so the top coat doesn't matter.
