Frt wheel bearings
I have a used complete wheel that I am going to be installing onto my bike. My question lies with the wheel bearings. I know there is a spacer that is supposed to be tight fitting between the two wheel bearings. Well mine is loose.
I tried to press my bearings farther into the wheel with no success, it was deforming my press table. Is there any damage to be caused from running the wheel like this? I would assume that the problem could be if the bearing ever popped in against the spacer the frt wheel would now be loose? I will replace the bearings if this causing any chance of real danger, but am hoping to not do that if possible. Thanks, George

How loose??? if just a tiny bit loose you are OK...
If a LOT loose then yes Damage will occur.. if the wheel will even turn freely. When you tighten the axle there will be load against the bearings. The center tube keeps the inner races the same distance apart as the outer races that fit in the wheel casting. Last edited by wswartzwel; 05-06-2008 at 07:25 PM.. |

Bill it's loose enough you can rattle the spacer around in between them. To tell you the truth I have about 700 gentle miles on them without issue. BUT I am going to go where the bike out this weekend and that brought about my concern.
I have another wheel, bearings and spacer I'll take some measurements of the two and decide how much play is in the spacer.
