Help with F800S

My younger brother just bought a BMW F800S and it only has 230 miles on it. It will currently not start even when attempting to jump it. It says EWS with a caution symbol next to it. Called Chicago BMW and they can't get it in until June 5th!

I tried to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer but to no avail!

With a short riding season here in Illinois I was hoping to try and fix this myself...

I know this is not an F800 forum but any help or direction will be GREATLY appreciated.

If its the antenna ring around where the key inserts, you are probably dead in the water. Go to either ADVrider.com site or I-BMW.com and read up on the EWS faults. There are hundreds of posts and numerous threads.

If it is the antenna, the most recent news is that the part has been updated again and the one ending in 247 on the part number is supposed to be the final cure all part for this problem. That also assumes that the 800s use the same ring as the R and K Series bikes.

Try your spare key and take everything else off the key ring if there is anything else on it, but most likely you will need the part which is now around $ 70 or $ 80. Warranty should cover it though.

I carry a spare antenna ring, the one ending in 247.

good luck,

geo

Just got done reading all those posts...can't believe how far fetched the problem is. I tried the plastic spare to no avail...

Thanks....

Does an F650GS have this same 'antenna ring'? It wasn't an obvious device it it did. And I had to take the key surround off to remove the center section of the 'fuel tank' in order to access the battery. I was hard-wiring in a heated jacket (don't tell Karl).

The other thing I find interesting is that some of them stage a miraculous recovery if left alone for a while. That could either be a cooling effect happening assuming that the part fails when its hot from engine heat or that there is a time out built into the ECU when there is a fault and it keeps it from restarting for a timed interval. All sounds very tricky to me, but again like the guy used to say, all I know is what I read in the papers.

If you could get Chicago to send you the part, you could do the temp repair with it and the second key to get it going and then have them replace the part when they can.

EWS hand me stranded once...

It will most likely be the Antennae ring and it is intermittent, so if you go outside at 12pm at night in your pyjamas and thumb the starter it will probably fire. Of course in the morning when you are ready to take it to the dealer it wont start.

Does the f800 have roadside assistance like my 12?

I just rang the BMW roadside assistance and told them I was at home and it would not start and they organised picking it up. I had to retreive it though.

61 35 7 705 247 is the number on the box.

Should take a week or less to get it if it has to be ordered. No, sorry, I got one for our bikes from a dealer stocking order so I would think most dealers have one or one on order.

funny they probably had no problem taking the 12 or 13 grand that the bike went for. Now when it comes to doing the warranty work they fluff you off. I would get a hold of the shop owner and have a nice talk with him.
