Ben Miller = my favorite jurno (If you can recall he had a yellow 12S for a year) - other than Mat Oxley (see his issue about Dorna) and Rupert Paul (the LJK Setright of our time?) that is.

I like the asterisk part of the verdict - mind.

PS: Devil's advocate > maybe...erm...the new owner (Bauer) has...something to do with Bike's verdicts these days? Just a question.

Like most Bike reviews, this is a interesting one and I'd recommend purchasing the magazine if you can find a copy.

The article makes the same point that tens of thousands of R1100S R1200S have been making over the years - that our bikes are stable, confidence-inspiring, and charismatic in a way that typical Japanese sportbikes are not, but that from a performance/value standpoint, they suck as any decent 600cc sportbike outperforms our bikes pretty handily at a fraction of the boxer's cost.

The HP2S just amplifies this - is even more stable, even more confidence-inspiring, and even more charismatic, but the performance/value situation is even worse as the bike is more expensive, yet is still handily out-performed by almost any garden-variety 600cc sportbike. (That's the asterisk in the article's title - that the HP2S was the best production bike in the world.... until the reviewer returned to the real world and rode his GSXR-600.)

mark,
imo your right but with a Caveat, at a certain point its not the bike but the combination of rider and bike. I like the bike, its a fun ride, fast guys on gsxers and R-1's don't leave me behind and their bike cost 1/2 of what mine cost. But that ok, it appeals to me and thats what counts in the end.

Chris,
yep you guys get all the european stuff first, I we in the colonies Appreciate this. As Beta testers for the motorcycle community we salute you.
As for our forward thinking in clothing appearl... well we were off a bit eh.

When the little fella grows up he can full fill his destiny, assuming you can bring yourself to do him in.

I couldn’t do it.

True. Riding friend Brad Hendry here aboard an R1200S beat hordes of Ducati 1098's, 999's, and Aprilia Mille's last year in the MRA Supertwins GTO Series, this, on an underpowered, overweight bike. But who cares if as Cycle World noted the other day, 99% of sportbikes never, ever, see a track... ahhh, but specs/costs are tossed out there as if everyone has intentions of serious racing. Sure. Yawn. Yeah, I do track days on the big bore Ducati here. It is seriously more powerful (and lighter) than the HP2 Sport, but the latter is the more special bike. It is the longterm keeper. Fortunately, for many of us, the two wheeled thrill is more than just the clinical how fast one can get from A to B.

So what is the caveat? The better bike will still be the better bike. Just because some people (arguably most!) are not able to extract the potential from the bike, does not make the bike less capable.

If you can humiliate someone on a jap liter bike with your HP2, that is not magically going to change if you switch bikes. The difference would likely be even bigger. Don't use the rider incompetence to boast the capabilities of your bike. A great bike may give a good rider a little edge, but a great bike will never make a good rider out of a bad one. Rider differences are rider differences, bike differences are bike differences. They're two different things.

That's said, if I had the money and I had to chose between a dime-in-dozen jap liter or a HP2, there wouldn't be much of a choice.

Throttlemeister,
The caveat is, for me, it doesn't matter, its not about who is faster, what looks better to everyone, whos has the biggest ball or the longest dick, it just doesnt matter. It about, for me, what i like and thats all that matters. I assume you have your likes and dislikes and that shape your opinion toward what you like, hopefully. of course if you are comming out from under the bridge, trolling that different, so be it, karma will take its toll. But I think better out you and your opinion.

sfarson,
i'm glad you understand
Varmit,
we have to get to gether, your fashion sense is....... impressive
