BMW Roundel R1100S with dead ignition and injection

My 2000 1100S has died on me; ignition switch ok; sidestand switch ok; Engine will run after a rest but only for a few seconds. Plenty of petrol and battery strong.

This had happened on a couple of times a week or so ago, but has now set in, so bike on't move.

Any thoughts?

How many miles does it have on it?

It could be as simple as a plugged fuel filter. It should be changed every 26K miles however with bad gas it could go sooner.

How do you know the injection is dead? Did you pull the injectors out and verify they were delivering fuel?

Did you test the spark plugs? (wires, etc)

R1100S with dead ignition and injection

Thanks for comments.

Injector leads have been pulled out and checked and there were no signals on meter; similarly on spark plug. Engine is still cranking ok.

Bike has completed approx 300 miles from initial failure.

Plenty of fuel has been spurting from fuel line, so the fuel is being delivered to the injectors.

It seems that it is the problem of the worst sort; intermittent and electrical. All wiring secure; Service connector plug is not corroded. Control wires appear to be ok.

Bike has done 44000 miles; is used in all weather conditions (but doesn't ride too well in black ice!).

Check the hall effect sensor... (trigger coils) The plug is tied to the frame near the alternator

+1. Almost assuredly it.
Without the Hall pulsetrain, you'll have neither injection nor spark.
And they often fail intermittently initially.

That bike will crank without the Motronic (dumb design). So it could be the Motronic is off.

If there's no power to the injectors (they work with constant + on one pin and intermittent ground on the other) then I'd say the fuel pump relay isn't on, which could be from the Motronic being off or from a bad relay. The Motronic, in turn, could be off due to the sidestand switch, Motronic relay, etc.

Do you hear the fuel pump when you crank the motor?

Do you have power to the coil?

Thanks guys for your comments.

It's late here in the UK (23:07 at time of typing).

The fuel pump "whirrs" so it seems that it is OK. I hope to be able to test the sensor and other elements (if necessary) tomorrow evening.

Roger's comments seem to match my experience.
