rip out low beam and replace w radar dxr ?
hi
thinking about ripping out the low-beam light and replacing it with a radar detector, perhaps wired into the power that would have used to feed the light. if maybe a valentine, put a remote display somewhere's i can see it. i have PIAAs installed near the roundels that provide better illum and conspicuity. why is this a bad idea? thanks justin

because it's easier to mount it up on the bars somewhere with a detachable mount.
Because a val1 isn't waterproof because you need all the light you can get because it's a blatant equipment violation to the wrong LEO (right or wrong, they DO write the tickets) you asked....

...if anything, you ought to be ripping out the High Beam!? But, as Jony said... YOU NEED ALL THE LIGHT YOU CAN GET!
There are better options for mounting on the 11S

I don't know where you are... but down here in Pinellas County, FL, sheriffs can and will ticket for inappropriate use of high beams, or whatever they call it. I run high beams all the time, but a guy on my local board recently got a citation for it.

You're right--the guy I'm talking about got his ticket at night. But if you removed low beam capability, you'd make the choice of either running that risk or only riding during the daylight!

not so fast w the ****can
i dunno about you guys, but the throw and conspic'y of my low-beam is about like piss-water ... ... and i've never gotten flashed back when my high-beam's on ... and we don't have annual vehicle inspections, and this bike's never gonna sell ever ... and w PIAAs and high-beam, i reckon i'd be in compliance with MD code below ... and the rubber boot over the low-beam lamp might give reasonable coverage to the non-waterproof V1 i take yer points about max light tho' so i'll do a search on the forum for those better mounting options for the r1100s wondering if i might be on the right side of justice after all ? ================================== http://www.michie.com/maryland/lpext.dll/mdcode/21eff/23a6b/23a8c/23b1a?f=templates&fn=document-frame.htm&2.0#JD_tr22-2241 (a) "Motorcycle" defined.- In this section, "motorcycle" includes Class M (multipurpose) vehicles that are designated by the Administrator. (b) Requirements.- The headlamp or headlamps on a motorcycle may be of the single-beam or multiple-beam type, but in either event shall comply with the following requirements and limitations: (1) The headlamp or headlamps on a motorcycle shall be of sufficient intensity to reveal a person or a vehicle at a distance of: (i) Not less than 100 feet, when the motorcycle is operated at any speed of less than 25 miles an hour; (ii) Not less than 200 feet, when the motorcycle is operated at a speed of 25 to 34 miles an hour; and (iii) Not less than 300 feet, when the motorcycle is operated at a speed of 35 miles an hour or more; (2) If the motorcycle is equipped with a multiple-beam headlamp or headlamps, the upper beam shall meet the minimum requirements set forth above and may not exceed the limitations set forth in § 22-222 (a) (1) of this subtitle, and the lowermost beam shall meet the requirements applicable to a lowermost distribution of light as set forth in § 22-222 (a) (2) of this subtitle; and (3) If the motorcycle is equipped with a single-beam lamp or lamps, the lamp or lamps shall be so aimed that, when the vehicle is loaded, none of the high-intensity portion of light, at a distance of 25 feet ahead, projects higher than the level of the center of the lamp from which it comes.

The problem with mounting it there is that you are blocking the rear sensor. It needs to be mounted high... above the instrument cluster.

Legal or not, there's power available everywhere, why remove a perfectly functional light? If you lose high beam, you've got no backup. Naturally it's up to you, but I power my accessories from elsewhere.
