R1200S Laser Slipon Install

I installed the Laser slipon exhaust on my R12S. The installation was very easy. I also built a plate bracket out of sheet metal. I am not too happy with the bracket but it is fine for now. I plan to make another one out of fiberglass. I will post that on this thread later.

Removing the old exhaust was easy, these two bolts

And these two springs are all the holds the old exhaust on.

Lots of pieces and minimalist instructions, the way I like it. Just give me a good picture.

It goes together something like this.

I had to put the exhaust on and off the bike a couple times to get the bracket located on the mufflers in the correct place from front to rear. Then it just slipped into place. Attaching the pipe to the muffler is accomplished with 4 springs, no pictures as my hands were full.
Here it is installed
This clamp replaced the lower springs, not sure why that is.

The final product looks like this. A lot better than the original I think.

It sounds good, not loud. I still have to tidy up some wiring and take it for a spin.

I like the sound of the Laser. It's like a burbling...

By the way, you will be able to take the silencers out, they don't make much difference.

I wondered how you would react to the bags of screws and dohickies that come with the Laser.

You don't seem to have much trunk space in your bike, unlike mine...

And that Bronco tire on the left... has it ever seen dirt??

You have a cactus on your plate, I have an arch. Tirebiter has a slot machine. I think Bill's has the Clintons...

I like the look of the Laser, but I wanted the full titanium akro, for some reason I really don't like the stainless turning "brownish"

I actually like the sound of the Laser best though. We have a lot of great options for exhausts or our R12s'

Mine's over two years old. It has not turned "brownish" in the slightest. Where does this information come from? Because actually I have a good idea who has Laser exhausts on their r1200s bikes, and have not heard of any turning brown.

I'm talking about the headers, not the cans. If your stainless headers aren't brown, then you must be polishing them every day.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. I will pull them out.

That does not bother me, putting stuff together has never been an issue.

I did not get the optional luggage.

Unfortunately no, it has not. Two years ago I pulled both axles on the bronco and rebuilt them, I installed new gears and installed an ARB locker in the rear and a power lok in the front. I added a few inches of lift, and installed 35" tires. I have not had it on the trail since. I just don't seem to have the time. I drive it to work occasionally, and around town but you are correct, I need to take it out and get it dirty.

I do get this guy dirty though. This picture does not do how dirty the bike is justice.

Lightfighter and I had a great ride last weekend and got to do something we don't get to do much, ride in Mud. Now I personally hate mud but it was fun. We had some god pics but Lightfighter's camera was acting up so none to post.

I think I just hijacked my own thread.

No. Why would I polish them every day?

Mine are the nice golden color, glinting shiny gold not muddy brown. Just like my r1100s headers used to turn.

How hot do the cans get? I need to secure my blinker wire where it goes between and over the cans.

They stay cool to the touch, relatively speaking. That is how I ran my wire. Up between the cans.

He better buy a Nikon too!

I was going to wrap some fiberglass insulation around the wires, then some of that silver heatshield tape and "secure" (read wedge) it between the cans. Then secure the wire to the heat resistant material above the cans with more of that silver tape.

What do you think, overkill??

Ok.

I must have had a bad set then, because my headers went from silver, to nice shiny gold, to dull tarnished copper-brown with about 2500 miles on them. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, I'm simply saying I didn't personally like it, so I went with the titanium headers. To each his own.

Here's a tip for you since you are new.

When someone has already bought something new for their bike after they have done their research, and they are proud of their purchase... And that person is putting time and effort into documenting and providing a step-by-step on the board as to installation. Don't try and rain on their parade by telling us about your decision making process and why you decided on a different brand that cost 2.5 times as much because in your mind it is better. What are you providing here? There are many other threads to discuss the merits of one brand over another.

And these are slip-ons. The header has not changed.

It's a good thing I've been lurking here for a while, so I know that you aren't representing this forum, or the BMW community as a whole, as far as the attitude toward new-comers.

If you will read my original post, you'll see that I did anything but "rain on the parade" I actually said that I think the Laser exhaust, is the best sounding exhaust out there!

How old are you? You sound a lot like my late grandfather who was an alcoholic, and always angry.

You might be better off, reading your post yourself, that way you might actually get your facts straight...!

I feel for you having grown up with a grandfather who was an alcoholic, and always angry... sad thing is, it shows!

Craig is nothing but nice and he was this time as well, I can not see anything angry old or grumpy in his post... he was trying to be helpful!

Lurking is one thing, learning from it another one... your post proves that both are not mutually INCLUSIVE!

what would happen if you swapped those cans left for right, seems like it might fit the space under the tail better...

When I read your post I had to look to make sure I did not get them on wrong. Kinda like wiring speakers or putting a distributor in an engine. If I can be 180 off the first time I usually am.

I don't believe they will fit the way you suggest with the brackets provided but I am sure it could be done.

I'd like to see that myself... it almost looks like you could reverse the brackets, looking at the 4th photo. However, the tips would be pointing away from each other, and the spacing may not necessarily be the same?

Here's a pretty awful photo-mock-up...
